[Sept. 5] [Original] Winter and Fire

Title: Winter and Fire
Day/Theme: Sept. 5 - a winter morning just like any other
Series: Original
Character/Pairing: Raz and Kayl
Rating: G
Notes: Thanks to everyone who commented. Much appreciated :).

Kayl silently watched in amazement as the snowflakes fell onto the castle grounds. It was always a silly tradition at the orphanage. Whoever got up first and saw the first flake would have good luck for the rest of the day. When she had told Raz, he scoffed and said something to the effect of 'Humans and your ridiculous traditions.'

She turned her head away from the window to look behind her. Raz, as usual, was sitting at the table reading a book about something or other. 'He's always reading one of his silly books. Doesn't he do anything else?'

Sensing her gaze, Raz looked up from his book at her. "What is it?"

Shaking her head, Kayl turned her gaze back to the snow. Raz narrowed his eyes briefly and returned to his book.

"Raz?" Kayl asked; her attention was still on the falling snow.

A grunt was her only reply. She went on, "Why don't you like the snow?"

'Ah,' Kayl thought. 'His usual snort. Don't set your book aflame Raz.'

"Fire dragons despise winter," he said, red eyes still scanning the book.

"What's there to hate about it?" Kayl asked, purely curious.

"Your ignorance knows no bounds." Raz said, finally putting down the book and laid his gaze on her back.

"What's that supposed to mean?" Kayl turned so that they were both staring at the other.

"The outside weather is extremely frigid; because of that, fire dragons like Driel and I cannot make our fire. Thus, we cannot defend ourselves in our dragon form. Simple enough for you?"

Even though Kayl was a little bit irritated by his condescending tone, she shrugged it off. "So during the winter, you don't go outside at all?"

Raz narrowed his eyes. "Not unless it is of the utmost importance."

Kayl nodded slowly and returned her gaze back to the snow. "You never thought you were missing out? Things like snow fights, snowmen, angels?"

Raz let out a small burst of laughter. Kayl let out a annoyed sigh and got up from her position by the window and walked to the table Raz was at. By then, Raz was reading a different book on the table. "Fine then. I'm leaving. I bet Driel would play in the snow with me. He's probably not afraid of the snow."

Raz's reply was just a low grunt; Kayl registered it as his way of saying 'I don't care. Leave. Now.'
