[Nov. 4, 2008][Original] Self-Scrutiny
Title: Self-Scrutiny
Day/Theme: Nov. 4, 2008 "competence as a compensation for loneliness (how can i possibly be lonely?)"
Series: Original (Navigator)
Character/Pairing: Julian, Stuart
Rating: PG
Kallo was off-duty and as no one was ill or injured at the time, the infirmary was as still as could be. The doctor, sitting in front of his computer, liked it that way. No one to look at him, no one to bother him, no one there at all. ...Of course, that meant no one to treat either. "Why did I become a doctor, anyway?" he wondered for a moment, "I could've just been a computer engineer or something else that kept me locked away from people."
When he stopped typing, the twin beat of his hearts served as a reminder. He had become a doctor in part to escape the hands of other physicians. Less scrutiny of his physical idiosyncrasies. "Way back in darker times, I would've been part of a freak show," he thought, "Of course, without modern science I would never have been born in the first place..."
He didn't miss the scientists who'd raised him. They were a poor replacement for proper parents. They hadn't even tried. Everything of any use he'd ever learned, he'd learned on his own. He didn't miss anyone from medical school either. He hadn't gone there to make friends, he had gone to get an education. It had been a good one. Between his innate skill and all he had been taught, Julian was a more than competent physician.
There, the records were updated. He saved the file yet again. He was always cautious about making sure he wouldn't lose any of his work. He never liked repeating a task he had done right the first time.
He glanced at the clock. Kallo wasn't supposed to be in for an hour. "I wonder if Stuart is going to come in today," he started to muse, but he swiftly put that stray thought to the guillotine. It was good to have some time to himself. He didn't especially enjoy the priest's strange efforts at friendship anyway. It was so horribly...awkward. Of course, perhaps that was just him. Stuart never acted like it was awkward... Then again, it might just be Stuart who thought this type of thing was normal. And who cared what Stuart thought? Certainly not Julian Jet.
