[Nov 4] [10th Kingdom] Maybe Someday
Title: Maybe Someday
Day/Theme: 4.) competence as a compensation for loneliness (how can i possibly be lonely?)
Series:10th Kingdom
Character/Pairing: Virginia
Rating: PG
There would be some guy, eventually, she told herself. Some love, some life, farther down the line. When she was ready. When everything else had been taken care of. When her father didn’t need looking after. When she was ready to leave him to his own devices. Maybe he’d start dating again. Though that thought caused a childish flare of resentment.
Her mother might still come back.
Yeah, right. He had gotten along just fine without anybody but me. And I’ve gotten along just fine without anyone too.
Besides, there was too much to do right now. She had her job, she had the recipes she was compiling, she had her dad to keep out of trouble, she had her grandma to tolerate, and her coworkers for company. She also had the memories of the way things had been before the happy ending turned sour.
It broke Dad’s heart, and left him this bitter, bumbling… man. His confidence had gone south when Mom left and his business followed it down the drain and then, all he had was me to take care of when he was the one who needed it. He loved her so much he was useless without her.
If her mother had died, maybe Virginia could’ve grieved and moved on. But as it was, she had just left, leaving nothing but a closet full of clothes her husband couldn’t afford and too many version of the question Why?
Virginia considered herself a capable, practical, independent woman. She also remembered that her father had been that way once. Losing Christine had taken that from him. It hadn’t just been his heart that had broken. How useless would Virginia be if that happened to her. Better to keep her heart empty then let it be broken. If it was just empty, she could fill it later on. With something safe. Once broken, though, it would never be the same, and neither would she.
Can’t let that happen. Too much to get done. Maybe someday.
