[04-09-05] [Fruits Basket] Mundane Winter Morning

Title: Mundane Winter Morning
Day/Theme: September 5th: a winter morning just like any other
Series: Fruits Basket
Character/Pairing: Souma Kyou, Souma Yuki, Honda Tooru, Souma Shigure
Rating: G

It was, by all potential accounts, a mundane winter morning. Certainly there was nothing to set it apart in any manner.

However, Yuki did not mind, as his life could hardly be deemed pedestrian. The curse precluded the luxury of relative normalcy, unfortunately. A nice, common winter morning was all too welcome.

He was sitting under the Kotatsu with Tooru and Kyou, the flickering light of the TV filling the room. Kyou was absent-mindedly eating an orange and watching the TV; Tooru was watching the program, too, with obvious rapture; Yuki was watching as well, albeit with less focus.

“Souma-kun,” Tooru said suddenly, turning her face to Yuki, her expression contented. “Do you like winter?”

“Well…” Yuki thought about it. “I don’t know…It’s a bit desolate, isn’t it,” he said sheepishly, cupping his hands around the mug of hot chocolate in front of him.

“Maybe…but,” she said, pausing thoughtfully, placing her index finger amusedly on her chin. “It’s necessary, right? I mean…all things must die eventually, go through that time where there’s nothing. But,” she said cheerily, giving Yuki a vibrant grin, “that just paves the way for something new!”

He smiled warmly at her. “I guess you’re right.” He took a sip of his hot chocolate.

Kyou had thus far ignored this exchange, but now chose to speak: “I like winter,” he said, turning his gaze from the TV to Yuki.

Yuki stared back coldly.

“I like winter,” Kyou said, a smirk curling upon his lips, “because rats die in the winter.”

Yuki chucked an available newspaper at Kyou’s head, and then resumed drinking his hot chocolate. The newspaper connected with Kyou’s head.

“You damn rat!” Kyou screamed, leaping up and pointing at Yuki with one hand, rubbing the side of his head with the other, attempting to assuage the pain.

“Baka neko,” Yuki replied.

“Aww, c’mon,” Tooru said, gesticulating at the tense pair in an attempt to pacify. “Let’s just enjoy the program, hmm?”

Kyou sighed resignedly - he often ceased if Tooru requested it now -, and plopped back down, sliding under the kotatsu once again. “I still like winter,” he said, flashing Yuki a malicious grin, which Yuki disregarded entirely.

At that moment, Shigure appeared in the doorway, standing akimbo and looking mildly concerned. His face relaxed, however, when he saw the two boys seated under the kotatsu. “Oh, good. I heard shouts, and thought my house was once again going to suffer a toppling at your hands,“ he said wryly, looking particularly at Kyou.

“OI!” Kyou said, noticing Shigure’s fixed gaze upon him, “It’s never my fault! It’s always that damn rat!”

Shigure laughed, and gave Kyou a dubious look, causing Kyou to launch into one of his typified furious tirades.

Yuki sighed, and leaned forward, placing his elbows on the table and laying his chin down upon his open palms. Even mundane winter mornings in the Souma house were a bit odd, not to mention loud, he thought, sighing.
