.

A latest edition Harley Davidson roared to a stop in a reserved park at All Saints Western General Hospital. Frank Campion, 2IC of the Emergency Department, stood back and admired his latest purchase with a satisfied smile before heading towards the ED to begin his shift.

“It’s about time!” Alison shouted, unamused from the nurses station where she was waiting.

“I’m two minutes early!” Frank said in his defence.

“Yes and I told you to be fifteen minutes early because-” Alison stopped when she noticed that Frank was wearing his leather jacket and carrying a motorcycle helmet. Her eyes widened in horror. “You did not!” She said accusingly. “What about the neighbours and what about Kathleen! She’s going to be awake all night and-”

“The neighbours are on holiday,” Frank replied calmly. “Not that I’d expect you to know that since you probably couldn’t even tell me what they look like. And Kathleen’s at your mother’s.” Alison looked embarrassed for a moment but managed to recover.

“Well, the reason that I wanted you here early is because I needed to introduce you to your new intern.”

“My new what?” Frank asked in a deadpan voice.

“Your new intern,” Alison repeated.

“That’s just low, even for you,” Frank said in disgust. He suddenly noticed the petite, blonde young woman standing a few feet behind Alison looking as though she wanted to melt into the floor. “How old is she? Twelve?”

“Have some decency, Frank!” Alison snapped. She took a step back so that the intern couldn’t hide any longer. “This is Zoe Gallagher. She’s been in pediatrics for a week, however her supervisor is on personal leave so she had to be reassigned.”

“So you thought that it would be a brilliant idea to assign her to a busy ED on a Saturday night. Just marvelous, Alison. I really do look forward to what wisdom you will grace us with next,” Frank said. He turned his attention to the intern.

Zoe Gallagher gave Frank the most confident smile that she could muster but she knew that he could see how terrified she was.

“It’s wonderful to finally meet you, Doctor Campion,” she said. “I’ve heard so much about you…. All good of course.” She extended her hand for Frank to shake and he greeted her by handing her his jacket and helmet.

“Put these in my office and try to stay out of my way.”

“Yes, Sir,” Zoe replied, obediently, doing what she was told. As she rushed to his office, her arms and legs shaking, Zoe could hear Frank and Alison battling it out behind her.

“This is a teaching hospital, Frank, you will teach her.”

“An ED is no place for interns!”

Zoe found Frank’s office and gently placed the jacket and helmet on his desk, amongst the masses of neglected paperwork. She noticed a series of framed photographs on his desk and took a step closer to look at them. One particular photo painted a stark contrast to the battlefield in the ED. Frank and Alison could be seen with genuine smiles on their faces in the company of a little girl who looked only a few years of age. Zoe had to assume that the photograph was a few years old now because Frank and Alison were anything but at ease in each other’s company.

“Are you going to work or are you going to stand here all night?” Frank’s voice suddenly boomed from behind her.

“I’m sorry,” Zoe stammered, spinning back around to see Frank. As she did so, she knocked another framed photograph onto the floor and watched the glass smash into hundreds of pieces.

“I’m so, so sorry, Doctor Campion,” Zoe said, her face flushed with embarrassment.

“No harm done,” Frank said with a little smile which just confused Zoe even more. “I’ve been meaning to get rid of that one. When you’ve finished cleaning that up I’ll see you in sub acute 2. Zoe did as she was told and cleaned up the photo of Frank and Alison on their wedding. As she was bout to leave she couldn’t help but notice the writing sewn into Frank’s leather jacket before she began her shift ‘born to be wild.’ It was going to be one hell of a night.
