Excerpt: "It's not me. . ." Ludwig said slowly, grudgingly.

". . .it's them. They are making me ask you to leave."

"I'm not surprised." Wagner scratched the back of his head. "They're afraid I'm influencing you."

The young king's lower lip puckered out, close to tears. As he begged his jaw quivered and he gasped in between each word. "I want to leave with you, Wagner!"

The composer shook his head, giving the king a tender, scowl. "Don't be crazy. Germany needs you, as for me. . .well you need my music." Richard looked around them before picking up Ludwig's and, thumb rubbing the palm meditatively. The king squeezed his hand, and Wagner hoped that none came upon them Ludwig wouldn't let go so soon, even if caught. I"ll write opera for you< it"s okay to be sad but don"t grieve my absence, as long as my music exist I am here."

Years later, the Starnberger lake wrapped around his ankles, Ludwig wondered if he would be walking deeper and deeper if he didn't let Wagner go.

And then, a blow to the head from behind; and he didn't need to wonder anymore.
