[Sept. 4] [I wish] [Naruto]
Title: I Hope
Day/Theme: September 4/I wish
Series: Naruto
Character: Kurenai and Shizune
Rating: G
Kurenai didn't believe in wishes. If there was something that couldn't be accomplished by hard work, time, or dilligence, then it was probably too unrealistic to waste time thinking about. She's sure of this because there are too many stars up there in the heavens that twinkled on unfulfilled. She said as much when Shizune told her to make a wish on a falling one.
"But what about dreams?" the medic-nin asked, bewilderment lighting her eyes. "Don't you have things you'd like to have happen, even if you know they never would?"
"Well, I suppose everyone does," she confessed. "But there's no point in indulging such silly things."
"No point? How can you even say that? Don't you know what dreams really are? They're what keep us going when the odds aren't in our favor. What allow us to believe even when the chips are down." Kurenai didn't mention how Shizune seemed to be using a lot of gambling analogies. "Dreams are the key to enduring even through the worse conditions of life! Wishes aren't silly, Kurenai--they're hope."
For a long while, there was nothing to say as both kunoichi continued to gaze up at the vast sea of diamonds above them. Quietly, Kurenai's voice floated through the silence.
"I wish you didn't have to make such a good point."
Shizune just smiled.

As part of my attempt to make multiple Kurenai drabbles, I'm picking different characters for her to interact with at different times. This time was Shizune.
Shizune seems like a character Kurenai would actually like having quiet conversations with. She's intelligent enough that Kurenai would take her words and advice seriously, and not just be amused by them or not think anything of as she might be with Anko. And yet, Shizune is probably just whimsical enough that she'd entertain things like wishes. A scenario like this just seems likely to me.
Kurenai may be too logical for her own good sometimes. She needs people like this to "un-ground" her a little. =D
