1. Heaven

"I am the first and only god," he says, "I am god." A simple sentence, it is not an order, for that requires others to carry out his desires and that would leave room for error. Instead, it is a statement because it something he knows is true.

(He knew it from the day he picked up the book, from the day he started saving people, from the day he decided to help everyone. His first kil--no, his first punishment convinced him of its truth.)

However, his voice does not come out as loud and clear as he wishes it could be. Instead it is a quiet sound, one that no body notices because no body is affected by it. He has nothing to prove his worth, nothing to show his reign, and for the moment he is a faceless, silent, thronelss king among the very people he is trying to help.

It will be loud soon. He knows that as well. He will make it loud, show it's worth. That is a promise.

2. Earth

"I am the Detective," another boy says soon after. He is a world away, this boy, but his statement is a louder one. People stop and listen to the Detective, listen to his words, and many of them applaud. This boy's words hold meaning, already influencing a large amount of people.

God, somewhere he won't admit this weakness, is jealous of the Detective. This other boy already has the sway and power God wants.

"I am going to stop this killer," Detective (the hunter, the trap, the chaser) continues to say.

This words echo in God's ears and he smirks.

Let them see if they can catch a god.

3. Space

"Hello," the Detective says to God. They know who each other are, figuring it out the moment their eyes met. They have similar minds, similar fires in their eyes, and it doesn't take much to show who is who.

Detective smiles and God merely gives a wry grin. This is easier than either expected and now they were going to just have to start their new game.

Hide-and-seek is over, tag has just begun.

"I'm Light," God says, offering his hand.

"I'm Ryuuzaki," Detective replies, accepting his hand, "Or L."

These are their new names and just like the last game fell off, they shedded 'God' and 'Detective'.

(Except for Light. 'God' still has a meaning to him, a meaning of power and a promise he has to complete. This promise is why he keeps this name a secret and pulls it out when he's alone.)

Their hands touch and their eyes lock, one word running through their minds. Prey.

Catch me if you can.

4. Ocean

"L," Light says, calling his new 'best friend', "Let's try to catch Kira."

Light has gained many pawns since the beginning, pawns that carry his name and his dreams. They are useless on their own but with him...they were unstoppable. Soon, 'Kira'--

Light now is both 'Light' and 'Kira'. One to show 'God' and the other to show 'Human'. Eventually the human side would have to die.

God does not like sharing.

--would be able to rule like he was meant to.

"Light, you can help by looking up this." A sheet is handed to him and L turns back to his research.

L has gained useful pieces as well. An entire police force, elite agents from all over the world, and a way of monitering anything he wants.

Luckily for Light, many of those pieces also belong to him partly. They are useless in that way and so L is more or less on his own.

"How about this?" Light asks. I've caught you.

"More," L replies.  Not yet.

Secret words rule them all but Light knew the most secret of them all.

5. Air

Light laughs, an omenous sound, and stares at the still body on the floor. There are others in the room but Light doesn't feel the need to stop himself. They don't move, don't seem to hear him, but that won't last for long. He stops laughing and quickly moves to the corpse.

L is lying there, his eyes shut. His face is upturned, reaching the heavens but not getting there because that is God's domain.

And Light knows that L knew the truth.

The Detective had finally caught God, finally figured out who he was. The cat cornering the bird.

However, the bird turned out to be an eagle and killed the cat.  Opposition was gone and now he could continue with his plans. No one could stop him.

I win.

6. Hell

At the end, Light has finally become a God. His voice was no longer silent, no longer the quiet unnoticed thing it was in the beginning. Now it is a powerful device, something that millions follow, and as he is the first god, there is no one else to compete with.

Everyone whispers of him, everyone acknowledges him, and he is the truly all powerful. Even the faintest mention of his name drives people to fear.

I am god.

That is his last thoughts as he slowly sinks to the dark place of death. Was this what L felt when he died? Was this how the others he killed felt?

He hoped not. His death has to be special, something others haven't experinced and never will.

"Is that so?" Ryuk chuckles, biting an apple. "Don't worry, it certainly will be."

This is how God entered the netherworldy domain of fire and ashes.

This is how he met the Devil and realised what true power felt like.
