[September 4] [Near Dark] A Thousand Miles (1/26)

Title: A Thousand Miles (1/26)
Day/Theme: September 4th/I Wish
Series: Near Dark
Characters: Severen, Caleb
Rating: PG13

In the 1980s, deep in the south, a boy named Caleb looked up at the stars and wished he were a thousand miles away.

"So take off."

"Might just."

But he wouldn't have, not if it hadn't been for the girl at the corner store, holding an ice cream cone. She didn't hold it like a snack, though he wouldn't realize that until later. She held it like a prop, like something she'd studied off a TV, a move practiced for acting class: How to Lick an Ice Cream Cone and Seduce Young Cowboys. It wasn't until later, after that girl had bitten clear through his skin, after her family dragged him into the Winnebago from Hell to travel a thousand miles and more, that he realized that the ice cream had never touched her tongue.

Caleb had never learned to be careful what he wished for.

A century and more earlier, in a northern city that would soon become a welcoming home to jazz clubs, mafia lords, and other forms of nightlife, a boy named Severen looked up at the stars and wished he were a thousand miles away.

Maybe he would have taken off even without the help of the man at the bar, the guy who just plain radiated bad news tough motherfucker, without all the posing and posturing that most young gangsters tried so hard at, posturing that, in hindsight, really just made them look all the more pathetic. Severen knew exactly what this guy was long before he saw the blood and the horrible burns inflicted by daylight. This guy was power, not the kind that tied you down to a city and a desk but the kind that set you free. Yeah, Severen probably would've taken off on his own if he had to - but he was sure as hell glad Jesse'd taken him those thousand miles and more instead.

Wishes had a price: you couldn't travel a thousand miles and expect to be the same person who left home. Some people ran from the consequences, talked about wishes like idle dreams while they hid from reality. But as far as Severen could see, wishes were a lot more fun when you embraced them.
