Title: Slip Roads 9/31
Day/Theme: 9 Oct/same time, same place
Series: Initial D/Prince of Tennis/Hikago
Character/Pairing: previous Takahashi Ryousuke/Fuji Yuuta
Rating: PG-13, references to incest between brothers
------------------
"Are you sure you should be out of bed?" Ryousuke asked when he came across Fuji Yuuta on the hospital grounds. It had only been three days since the accident, after all.
Yuuta looked up from his wheelchair, his eyes widening in welcome when he saw him.
"Takahashi-san," he said. "I'll be fine. It's only for a while. I was starting to go crazy, just lying in bed all day." He rolled his eyes towards the empty bench beside him, and Ryousuke took the hint, sitting down. He remembered how athletic Yuuta was; inactivity would most likely frustrate him.
"My colleague said that you'll make a full recovery. I'm glad," he added honestly.
Yuuta smiled at that and turned his attention towards a couple of children playing at the far end of the hospital grounds. "I told myself a few times that I should visit you in Gunma, but this wasn't the way I planned it," he said with self-deprecating humour.
"Actually, you could come for a visit after you're discharged from hospital. I could show you more of Gunma."
"Maybe."
Ryousuke hadn't realised he could be hurt by the curt answer, until he heard it.
His expression must have shown some of it, for Yuuta explained, "Aniki... he's being very protective."
Ah.
"I'm sure that if it were up to him, he'd have rushed me back to Tokyo by now. But luckily Dr Aso has ruled that out until I'm better. So I've put Aniki to work taking care of my other matters for now. Most of my luggage is still at the hotel I was staying at, and there's the car I crashed..." He made an irritated noise in his throat.
"Why were you in Gunma, anyway?" Ryousuke asked.
"Tennis retreat."
"What?"
Yuuta chuckled. "Every year the tennis club I belong to holds a weekend retreat. It's like a bit of a social club and tennis clinic all in one. It's organised by an old schoolmate."
Ryousuke knew that Yuuta loved tennis, but he didn't realise it was to this extent.
"It's always held in autumn and always in my schoolmate's hotel in Gunma." He frowned. "I bet Aniki will find a way to blame everything on Mizuki-san," he said, almost to himself.
"What?"
"Nothing."
Ryousuke was about to ask more, but he saw Fuji Syusuke walking towards them. Given his slight figure and friendly expression, it was a bit difficult, at first glance, to think of him as the older one--or indeed, as someone who was manipulative and vicious, as Yuuta had mentioned--until he spotted them, and his eyes widened.
"He's so predictable," Yuuta said.
"Yuuta!" Fuji Syusuke said, his expression back to friendly. "I only went to get you a drink, and here you are..." he studied Ryousuke. "Ah, Takahashi-kun, I didn't recognise you at first!"
Ryousuke had no doubt that Fuji Syusuke had recognised him in an instant--the denial, not to mention the 'Takahashi-kun', were probably deliberate. "Fuji-san," he said in greeting.
"Aniki, stop it," Yuuta said, his face turning into a scowl.
"Hm?" Fuji Syusuke turned an innocent expression towards both of them, before turning to Yuuta. "We should be getting back, it's getting cool. It would be terrible if you caught a chill, Yuuta." He rearranged the dressing gown wrapped around Yuuta and smoothed back his hair: quick, intimate touches, with fingertips trailing across Yuuta's skin with almost lingering slowness.
Yuuta made an irritated sound. "I'm not a piece of meat you have to fight over, Aniki. Ryousuke-san, you better go back first."
As Ryousuke hesitated, Yuuta rolled his eyes, making sure Fuji Syusuke saw it. "I can take care of things here," he said.
Ryousuke ignored Fuji Syusuke's glare and inclined his head. "All right, then. Take care, Yuuta." He made the last word especially soft and intimate, and was rewarded by the glint of appreciation in Yuuta's eyes--he knew which of his brother's buttons to push, it was clear--and the intensifying of Fuji Syusuke's glare.
When he drove home, the sky was already dark, an inky blankness brightened only by stars. That was another thing he had missed when he was in Tokyo--there was always too much ambient light that one could hardly see the stars. Only Yuuta's company in those nights had made things much better. He worried a little about Yuuta, and promised himself to visit more often.
Before he entered the road that led home, Ryousuke spotted a car parked at the side. Yellow: Keisuke's car. He came to a stop and got out. "Keisuke?" he called, seeing his brother sitting in it.
The car door opened, and Keisuke got out. "Aniki," he said.
Ryousuke was reminded of the way Yuuta had said that word too, Keisuke's soft, hesitant voice contrasting with Yuuta's annoyed tone. "What are you doing here?"
"Just thinking. Remember when we used to wait here for each other before going out to meet the others?"
Ryousuke remembered. When they had started racing illegally together, to avoid their father's suspicions, they had left home individually, and always met here first. Much later, they had become more brazen about it--or perhaps, Ryousuke had, and Keisuke had simply followed. " 'Same time, same place'," he said, the old, hackneyed expression coming to his lips once more.
Keisuke smirked.
