-----------

They were nearly finished with dinner when Ryousuke's ears caught the hum of another car engine, one that was familiar. He put down his chopsticks and simply listened, aware of Keisuke suddenly staring at him in astonishment. It had been a while since he heard it.

"Someone's outside," their mother said, standing up. "I'll go and see who it is." She soon came back. "Father," she said to their grandfather. "You better come outside. I think your friends are here."

Their grandfather gave a huff. "It's about time!" He stood up and followed her outside. But he looked oddly pleased, to Ryousuke's eyes.

They--Ryousuke, Keisuke and their father--couldn't help but give a start as they heard an extremely loud voice exclaim, "But we were nearly in an accident, old man! Who remembers to call at such a time?"

And on the heels of that, another voice, admonitory: "Shindou!"

Keisuke muttered, " 'Old man'? Who the hell calls Grandfather that?"

"I'll go and see if I can help," Ryousuke said, standing up. He heard Keisuke say, "I'm coming too" behind him as he approached the front driveway. The evening sky was dimming, but there was enough light for him to make out the figures of two men, each clutching an overnight bag (one was also holding a shopping bag from a convenience store, for some reason).

The confrontation--if confrontation it was, and not merely a noisy welcome--had already ended, and their grandfather was making introductions.

From where he was standing, Ryousuke could see his mother's blink of astonishment and quick recovery, before she smiled welcome. He could sympathise; he wasn't expecting his grandfather's friends to be two young men that looked to be even younger than Keisuke. Both of them were of a similar height, one in casual T-shirt and jeans, the other in a shirt--now slightly rumpled from travelling--and pants.

Beside him, Ryousuke heard Keisuke mutter, "Those are Grandfather's friends?"

"Pleased to meet you. Sorry for the intrusion," one of them was saying to his mother and bowing. "I'm Touya Akira."

"Pleased to meet you, Takahashi-san!" the other one. Ryousuke recognised him from his voice to be the one who had been shouting. "My name is Shindou Hikaru. Sorry for the intrusion." Surprisingly for someone who looked like he didn't care about formal manners, he bowed deeply.

Ryousuke's mother's smile widened and bowed in return. "I'm glad to meet you at last. Father hasn't told me much about you-"

"But whatever they are, it's all lies," Shindou said, straightening. He was one of those who spoke without thinking, Ryousuke judged, either because no one had taught him the usefulness of tact and diplomacy while growing up, or because he simply didn't care.

Touya Akira, beside him, said "Shindou!" It sounded like an oft-said exclamation. Unlike his friend, he seemed to be calm and sensible, actually acting his age.
But wait. Ryousuke frowned. His night vision was excellent, and he was sure he had just seen Touya kick Shindou in the ankle...

"-but please come into the house, you must be tired after travelling for the whole day. And Fujiwara-san, too, please come in and have a drink."

Ryousuke's head snapped up at that; he had nearly forgotten about Takumi in his evaluation of the visitors. He searched for, and found Fujiwara across the length of the driveway, and felt his breath stop in his lungs.

Despite the years that he had known Fujiwara Takumi, the other man still reminded of the first time they had met: a teenager, shy yet oddly confident about his skills, not especially awed by the reputation of the Takahashi brothers. He was standing by his eight-six, looking as though man and car belonged together: it was an image Ryousuke carried often in his mind.

Now Fujiwara was looking bemused as Shindou urged him to go in as well, but he shook his head, bowed to Ryousuke's mother and grandfather. "I have to get back," he said, his voice carrying only a little.

"Oh," Shindou said. "Thank you for driving us all the way here, Fujiwara-san. You didn't have, not after the accident-"

Ryousuke felt his fingers tighten in a fist. What accident? Fujiwara looked unharmed.

"It's all right," Fujiwara said, his words unhurried. "Excuse me, I have to go," he said with a bow. He glanced around, seeing them, and a look of astonishment entered his face.

It was Keisuke he was looking at, Ryousuke realised.

But after only a moment Fujiwara gave a nod, as though to himself and turned to his car. Ryousuke wished he would turn back so he could see Fujiwara's reaction, but Fujiwara only gave a casual wave to the two visitors and got back into his car.
Without another word, he drove off.

The front yard seemed empty suddenly. The darkening sky made it difficult to see everyone clearly, although they had already turned on the lights in the yard. Ryousuke turned his head in the direction of the driveway and looked in the direction where Fujiwara had driven, though it was too dark to see anything and, considering the usual speed at which Fujiwara drove, it was too late to hear his car either.

But Ryousuke could have stood there all night, waiting forever if need be.

"Aniki, what are you still doing here?" Keisuke said from behind him, making him jump.

Ryousuke turned towards him, blinking as his eyes adjusted to the lighted house.

"Everybody's gone in already," Keisuke said. "We were wondering where you were." His eyes were bright with curiosity. He looked in the direction of the driveway too, his expression hidden in the shadows. "That was Fujiwara, huh? Hasn't changed." He peered into the dark too, as though he could catch a glimpse of that erstwhile rival.

Ryousuk wanted to tell him not to look. Instead, he turned to go back into the house. "Come on. I think Grandfather's ready to introduce his friends to us, right?"

Behind him, Keisuke said, "Hey, wait for me!"
