[October 3, 2008] [Angel] Cave
Title: Cave
Day/Theme: October 3. forever
Series: Angel
Character/Pairing: Angel; mild Angel/Spike if you want to read it that way, background Wes/Fred and Wes/Illyria.
Rating: PG
-
The clock strikes twelve, Angel is alone in his office, and it hits him for the first time that Fred's soul is gone. She has been devoured more completely than Cordelia and Connor.
And Angel let it happen.
The clock strikes twelve, and it's a new day.
-
Wesley is sitting at Fred's old desk, tracing his finger across a picture of her.
"You need to get out."
Wesley doesn't move an inch. "I know."
Folding his arms, Angel asks, "What are you going to do? Just sit there and waste away?"
Before Wesley can answer, Illyria walks in, her head tilted to the side. Angel watches her glide over to Wesley in a way that reminds him both of a hawk and a cat. She leans forward, her hair brushing across Wesley, in a manner not unlike Fred. Wesley flinches, but says nothing on it. "I find this place displeasing."
"Where would you like to go?" Wesley asks and it's almost like he's engaging with the world again.
"I need more space," Illyria says. She takes a step back and hisses as much as a god can, "The walls are so confining. The push me out of balance." She turns and stares at Angel, unblinking, as she continues, "I am not accustomed to this feeling and I no longer wish to feel it."
Wesley stands up. "Follow me."
As Illyria follows Angel feels cold dread; Wesley is trading one cave for another one that can walk with him. And Angel is helpless to stop him.
-
"If I knew you were going to be this bloody broody," Spike says, after barging into his office uninvited, and sits on Angel's desk, "I would have let you break up with me proper."
"I really don't have time for this."
Spike reaches over and grabs the paper he's reading. "Revising health care for your evil minions." He drops the papers back down in front of Angel. "I can see how that's real important."
"Gunn did it last week," Angel says. "I'm just approving it."
"That's even more important," Spike tells him, serious. "Because I'm sure you know way more than Lawyer boy about insurance. All that time you spend hanging out with people, I'd wager."
"You're really going to want to shut up now," Angel says, giving him a sharp look before pulling away from his desk and walking over to the window.
Spike changes tactics. "Do you really think she'd want you to act like this?"
"I think," Angel says, voice soft and cold, "that there's nothing left of her in this world so I don't know and I'm not sure it even matters."
"If you're really going to try and pull that with me, you better try harder," Spike tells him. "It's insulting, for starters."
Angel couldn't see the city he was staring at, so he turned around. "It shouldn't have been her."
"Never should be," Spike says. "But that's how the story goes. You lose the girl - "
"Another."
"Another," Spike agrees. "You just keep going on because sometimes you get lucky and get to save her."
-
When the clock strikes twelve again, Angel is, again, in his office; but Spike is with him this time.
It's a new day.
