[Sept 19] [Wall-E] Enough To Know What I'm Without
Title: Enough To Know What I'm Without
Day/Theme: 19. creative interpretation of orders
Series:Wall-E
Character/Pairing: Wall-E
Rating: G
His was a simple, solid function, to match a simple, solid design. Gather, compress, stack. Gather, compress, stack. For ever. Or until his solar cell burned out, or some other accident occurred. From those simple instructions, though, new definitions emerged with a faint, flickering personality. By then, there was no one and nothing to distract or disapprove of this change, and the personality grew with the new thoughts on his function.
The gathering continued, but now he collected as well. The mindless compacting had given way to curious inspection and attempts to understand. He was interested in the debris, in what it meant, in what it meant that he was interested in what it meant. He still stacked, but now he built, imitating the buildings that his creators had also created.
He was fascinated by his long-gone creators, and tried to emulate what they had made, like a child doing its best to mimic an absent parent. With all his fellows broken down, he had the containment vehicle to himself, and he decorated it up as he had seen the empty human houses decked out.
He still did his job. His programming was still intact and obeyed. It’s just that there was more now, so much more to see and experience and try to understand. Now there was enough of him to want more.
