[September 16][Originals] Statistics
Title: Statistics
Day/Theme: September 16 / don't trust a statistics you didn't fake yourself
Series: Original / Misfits
Character/Pairing: Dennis Lawson, Stella West-Barnes
Rating: PG
The annual statistics were highly anticipated and when they finally came in, the state among the commando leaders could be described as general ashonishment.
The ICUs scored surprisingly high, something no one -- least of all the ICU leaders themselves -- had expected considering that there was only one of them and it was Dennis Lawson's.
"I knew it would help that Kev wasn't on the team when the information was requested but it couldn't have been that effective," Dennis himself marveled to himself.
Stella who had only glanced at the statistics without much interest and was now busy with some paperwork. She looked up with a self-sufficient smile on her face every once in a while to see Dennis incredulously shake his head at the report.
"There must be some mistake," Dennis finally concluded.
"Is that so?" Stella asked without the faintest trace of surprise in her voice.
Dennis pushed the report towards her and standing behind her started to point various things out. "Here it says that there is no case of addiction in any ICU."
"Well, Jane has long overcome her addiction," Stella reasoned.
"Okay, I accept that as an excuse. But here is the survey on our team in particular and according to it there is a very limited use of drugs, either legal or illegal. Twist it and turn it as you will, there is no way you can tell me that half the team drinking almost every night is considered limited."
Stella nodded.
"And here," Dennis continued turning the page. "This is completely tweaked. There is no way this is a report on our team. They've done some mistake. Not that I mind but with their obsession with bureaucracy, I just don't understand how this could have happened."
Stella exhaled sharply. "Okay, I admit it. I'm to blame for that."
"What?"
"I tweaked things a bit to make them look better."
The surprise on Dennis' face was almost funny. "You ... you faked our statistics?"
"I tweaked them," Stella insisted. "I kept some things like the fact that we had deaths and suspensions but I changed a few things to make sure it looked presentable."
Dennis stared at her incredulously. He had known Stella was not a stranger to manipulation, had witnessed some of her plots over the years and even though he didn't particularly like her, he had to admit it that some of her work was impressive but not in a million years had he expected her to fake statistics.
"Kev was still in the statistics," Stella explained as if it were reason enough to commit a workplace-related crime. Both of them knew what happened to people who faked information given to the higher-ups. "And it looked terrible. It would have proven that our pet project was a bad idea. In fact, we would probably have been shut down and I wasn't going to take that risk. Not after everything."
Dennis' jaw had fallen open and he seemed unable to grasp all the information Stella had just offered. He had never heard about the possibility of the Independent Commando Units being shut down after only a year with them being the pilot which meant Stella had kept that from him.
"Have you considered the repercussions?" he asked when he felt capable of talking again.
"Of course I have. I spend most of my time doing paperwork, Dennis, and this ICU project is the only way for me to get back into the field sooner or later and there is no way I'm going to let anyone ruin that."
"Who could find out this is a scam?" Now, Dennis was in scheming mode. He could get angry about it later all he wanted. Now, he had to find out how well Stella had planned everything and how risky it was -- not only for her but also for him. She had just made him an accomplice after all.
Stella gave him the answer he dreaded most: "Joseph."
"Plans?"
"It must have been some mistake. I have all the real data here on the computer and had someone fix it up to make it appear as if I sent that information in. But I doubt he'll ask."
"Why are you so confident about this?"
"Because I want to make this a better place and our ICU project is working wonders. If I have to take risks to make sure it continues, I'll do that."
And Dennis knew how lucky he was to have her because he never would have grasped the situation. He would never have been bold enough to do what Stella had done. He would have given up on the ICU.
