A/N:  I swear, if the LJ cut doesn't work this time, something's going to get destroyed. Very badly destroyed. And this story is like two merged together. Ish.

Winry sat down on the table, looking at the equipment before her. There were knuts and screws, metal joints and wires. There were wrenches, screw drivers, and three different kinds of hammers. Everything she'd need to repair Ed's arm after his latest fight.

If she saw him again, that was.

For all she knew, he be getting badly wounded right now. He could be recklessly attacking someone, trying his hardest to keep his promise true. And by doing so, he could die.

The girl shudders at that thought and puts down the wrench she had grabbed instinctively. "Ed wouldn't die," she murmurs, "because if he did, he knows I'll hurt him in the afterlife too."

That thought comfurts her slightly until she starts to feel goosebumps on her back. A pair of eyes are watching her again, the same pair that she feels everyday. She never can see where those eyes are from, but she knows that they are there all the same.

There were many things Winry knew and one of them was that she was being constantly watched. Every move she made, every step she took, there was someone hiding and recording it. If she bought some food, it would be noted down, and even how long she took washing the dishes was probably observed.

She also knew this was connected to Ed and Al somehow. They had left in a hurry the last time she saw them and instantly she knew that her being watched--and only watched--was because of the two.

The fact that she had not been attacked and hurt was probably because the brothers had decided to protect her and follow the watcher's commands.

(Those idiots. Did they think she couldn't handle trouble herself?)

That was probably the reason they were out fighting somewhere, getting hurt because of this impossible quest of theirs. Trying to protect her and defeat them at the same time.

They really were idiots. Good thing she was around to show those Elric brothers some sense.

Tossing her golden hair over her shoulder, Winry got up from the table and frowned outside the window. If she had to, she could deal with her could-be attacker. If she had to, she could go and hide from their sight.

Next time she saw Ed, she'd hammer that into his brain. She wasn't some damsel he had to protect. She was strong by her own rights. He'd also tell her what was going on.  After all, she had spent years out of the loop and she didn't want to have a repeat performance.

Until then, though, she'd wait here for them. She'd wait with her tools and her weapons, like she always did, and repair him when he comes back with his sheepish grin and mangled arm. She'd hit him on the head and complain about what he did, but she'd keep a smile hidden and feel lighter on her feet.

Because that was what she did: she waited and gave them a place to return.

(A place to come back to when the world was too much for them and they needed something to remind them they are real, they are worth something.)

She didn't mind the waiting too much--she was used to it and realized its importance.. She just didn't like being left out.

Sitting back on her chair, the girl glanced at the door from time to time as she polished her tools.

Winry was good at waiting.
