[Sept 11] [Mirrormask] Spoiled

Title: Spoiled
Day/Theme: 11. Bend Over, Here It Comes Again
Series: Mirrormask
Character/Pairing: Helena
Rating: PG

The second shockwave rolled over the Escher-scrawled town. Candy-colored debris went whipping by, various bits of the everyday life in this place, blasted away and gleaming like shrapnel. The color didn’t last long. Shadow fell over the place, swallowing it up and leaving only partially digested remains in the darkness. Even the eerie sphinx cats fell silent and fled in front of it.

“Doomed…” came the weak whisper from the Prime Minister. He didn’t remind Helena of her father when he was laying there defeated. Her dad never looked broken, even at his most broke.

The Queen of Shadows roamed the land, not on foot, not the way she liked to dress, but her will and her eyes flew on black wings or rolled like banks of fog, ruining everything in her search for the lost child that looked like Helena. The City of Light wouldn’t survive this onslaught, and didn’t even seem able to run from it. It didn’t even seem likely that the City of Shadows would survive. The whole world was falling apart from the inside, while the runaway princess did her best to destroy it from the outside.

A flock of birds that looked like they were made from splinters of black glass swarmed out over the land. Helena, Valentine, and the few courtiers not yet twisted and ruined had to double over behind the ruins of finery to avoid being seen or cut by them.

This had been a whole kingdom of light and goodness, Helena thought, looking at them. And it was being destroyed by a bratty girl and her equally spoiled mother. Now all they could do was cling to something and let it happen. Like the floating giants, trying to hold each other in place, the two cities were thrown out of balance.

And as usual, Helena thought grouchily. Somehow it all becomes my fault.
