Rating: PG
“Just admit it!” The words were punctuated with the jab of her finger right into the forehead of the skull on his t-shirt.
“Admit what?” he growled, leaning in close to lock eyes with her. She wasn’t intimidated and leaned right back.
“That there is more to you than you show to everybody! Why are you so determined to keep that annoying, pig-headed mask on??” She threw her arms in the air in exasperation.
“Why are you?” He did the opposite, crossing his arms across his chest.
“What?” The question threw her off a touch, but she kept the scowl on.
“You heard me. Annoying and pig-headed,” his voice started out harsh, but dropped to mocking drawl. “And determined happen to be things you hold up in front of your face too.”
“What?” she said again. “I do not!”
“I’ve seen it, princess. There’s a side you keep hidden too.”
“There is not!”
“So you admit to being one-dimensional?” He was smirking now, as if he had never been angry, and maybe he hadn’t been.
“Do you ??” she snapped back. She was almost bristling, but her hands were shaking and her eyebrows had started to turn up in the middle which meant she knew she was losing and was getting upset about it. They kept up a sizzling stare down while he enjoyed the close contact until his smirk broke.
“What are you afraid of?” he laughed finally. “Who are you trying to impress?”
“Nobody! Everybody! I-” she felt her voice get a little shrill and bit it back down. She took a deep breath and pulled her arms in tight to her sides. “We are on tv,” she reminded him as calmly as she was able. “Anything we show here will be seen by everybody, and while I might someday want to show someone other sides of me, now is not the time or the place.” He raised a cocky eyebrow and she went red. That was more than she had meant to reveal all by itself. “And it certainly won’t be you!”
“Too late for that, princess,” he said, winking at her. “We’ll just have to work out some sort of code.”
He looked so smug that she blinked at him for a moment. Then, she got it, and God help her, she almost grinned back. As it was, there was a telltale twitch of lip, but he saw it, and he did grin.
