[Sept 7] [Lady in the Water] Endings Aren't Always Happy

Title: Endings Aren't Always Happy
Day/Theme: 07. but what if it doesn't?
Series:Lady in the Water
Character/Pairing: Young-Soon
Rating: PG

What would they do if it didn’t work? Young-Soon watched Mr. Heep hold the thin, pale girl and heard him speak to someone long dead. Tears brimmed in her eyes and her bright nails dug into her palms. She had never suspected so much anguish would lay under his sweet, stuttering exterior. To hear him beg forgiveness for not saving his dead children was heartbreaking.

She had always believed that there was truth in the old stories, but in her hope to see that truth, she had forgotten that the oldest tales didn’t always have happy endings. Story lay limp in Mr. Heep’s arms. All the color had faded from her, even her hair was white now. The terrible gashes on her legs and body didn’t even bleed red.

They had been wrong to many times already. Had not been the healer. Mr. Heep was their last chance to get this right, the last hope to even try for the happy ending. If he wasn’t the healer, if he couldn’t save her, then the story would die with Story.

If she died, how much of their hope and belief would she take with her? It would be too easy to forget the things she had done. She would become just a strange girl who had had an accident on the grounds and died. Maybe she would become a ghost story for some of the younger kids in the compound, but that was all.

It couldn’t end that way! Young-Soon blinked back her tears and clenched her fists. She willed Mr. Heep to be the healer, concentrated on Story’s injuries as if she could heal them herself. She saw Mr. Leeds staring too. He needed this to be true as much as she did. They all did. Who would believe this if Story died? Even her own mother who knew the story would say it was just a fairy tale.
