[August 27, 2008][Original] Punctual

Title: Punctual
Day/Theme: Aug. 27, 2008 "Slightly out of character"
Series: Original (Navigator)
Character/Pairing: Marguerite, May, Jorge, Marta, etc.
Rating: PG

"Where's Pilot Radcliff?" Marguerite asked irritably, storming down the hall.

Hakim and Leona practically jumped to get out of her way, stopping their conversation about recent advances in stellar cartography. Hakim heaved a sigh of relief as the determined woman passed them by. "Get in her way on a day like this, and it'll be the last day you have to make your calculations about which way Mecca is..." Leona laughed nervously. Hakim chuckled as well, watching Marguerite sweep away like a cyclone.

"Miss Duay!" the second-in-command of Navigator stopped the blond woman with her call.

Marta turned on her toes, spinning around to face Marguerite. "Do you need something? Have we made contact with Serendipity yet?"

"No, it's nothing like that." She shook her head. The one strand of hair too short to be consistently pulled back in her bun fell across her forehead. "I can't find May. Usually at this time she's in the galley making conversation with whoever is on duty and taking way longer to eat her breakfast than should be allowed, but she's not in the galley or in her quarters. Have you seen her? I thought since the two of you are so friendly, you might know something."

"Nope. I have no idea. As far as I knew, she was still assigned to the night shift," Marta shrugged. "Back to the day schedule, huh?"

"She was supposed to start yesterday, actually," Marguerite noted coolly. May was not obviously making the transition as well as was desired. Not that that was really any surprise where the young pilot-in-training was considered.

"Well, I'll see if she's in the hold or anything before I join you on the bridge. You might as well go ahead and wait there. She's bound to show up eventually," Marta assumed.

Agreeing with this look at the situation, Marguerite turned around and headed back to the bridge. She opened the door to see Captain Barrett in her usual place, Yu typing furiously away at his station, and Priya leaning over...May Radcliff of all people! "You got better after practicing at night," the Lingwan woman remarked to the pilot.

Marguerite clenched her hands, absolutely enraged. She stormed over to the navigation system and pilot's seat. "Radcliff, when did you get here? I've been looking all over for you!"

"Uh, right at seven. Just like you wanted," May said dumbly, as though the answer were obvious.
Priya nodded, confirming the story, "She was here before me."

Marguerite couldn't believe her ears. What sort of trickery was this? How had May managed to be on time to her post while Marguerite had considered her late and gone off to find her?

Jorge strode casually onto the bridge. The captain recognized the sound of his heavy footsteps and smiled at him over her shoulder. "Everything is in good condition, Captain," he reported, "No disturbances at all this morning."

"That's right!" Marguerite remembered, Jorge had been on the bridge when she had checked in before going to chase down the delinquent pilot. "Lieutenant Sanchez," she approached him hopefully, "You were here earlier. You saw that May wasn't at her post when I got here, right?"

He cocked his head to the side, recalling the situation. "No, she wasn't here."

"As I thought!" she responded, glad that she was still in control of the situation.

"But that's because you got here fifteen minutes early and got too impatient to wait for her because your watch is set five minutes fast," Jorge finished. He hated to have to burst her hopes, but the story needed to be completed.

"I'm learning to be punctual," May grinned.

"I'm turning my watch back," Marguerite sighed.
