Title: Not Himself
Day/Theme: Aug. 27, 2008 - Slightly out of character

Characters/Pairing: mild Shirley/Lelouch; mentions of Suzaku, Kallen and Milly

Lelouch rarely ever let himself lose his cool. However, the bad taste left behind from the result of his latest chess match was too much to bear. An angry fist pounded against one of the tables in the study hall, drawing a concerned stare from Shirley, who had been sitting quietly at her table studying up on science homework that she needed to finish by Thursday.
"Is something wrong, Lulu?" she asked, turning around to Lelouch at the table behind her.
Lelouch clenched his fist and prepared to pound down again. "I can't believe I let him beat me," he said.
"You mean Suzaku?"
"Yeah. I was this close to winning, but then he pulled this move on me, and before I knew it, he called 'checkmate'. Why didn't I see it coming?"
"Don't beat yourself up about it, Lelouch," said Shirley. This time, she put one of her hands close to his in order to get him to look up, but backed off from actually touching him. "Everyone has their off days....even me. Sometimes I have to ask Kallen or Milly with my homework when I'm having trouble. If they're not around, I try to get it done myself. It's all a matter of being determined to want to do well. I'm sure you'll get him next time."
"Yeah, you're probably right," he said, immediately formulating a strategy to get back at Suzaku for their pending rematch. "Thanks, Shirley."
Shirley smiled cheerfully. "No problem. You're still number one in my book. Do you think you'd be able to teach me how to play one day?"
"I suppose I could fit some time in. When do you want to start?"
