[August 24, 2008][Shadow Hearts] Who Protects Whom?
Title: Who Protects Whom?
Day/Theme: Aug. 24, 2008 "The turn of her heel, the nape of her neck"
Series: Shadow Hearts
Character/Pairing: Margarete, Halley, Yuri/Alice
Rating: PG
"I guess Yuri likes the type of girl he can protect," Margarete thought. She certainly (excepting rare occasions) was not that kind of woman. She was a spy and with a nice combination of luck, talent, and experience, she could get through most things on her own. And she was fine that way. She was unwilling to change herself to suit a man. Yuri and Alice made a cute couple after all- Margarete wasn't too stubborn to admit it.
It was easy to catalogue all the ways Yuri protected Alice- punching a man in a bar who tried to take a look up her skirt (not that Yuri himself was above this), taking hits for her when they were threatened by beasts and monsters, catching her when she slipped, and the obvious matter of saving her from an unbalanced Chinese magician. The only one allowed to cast a predatory gaze on Alice was clearly Yuri. Margarete found it funny- and even a little endearing.
"I'm not a woman who needs protecting," Margarete declared.
"Huh, that's for sure," Halley laughed, "If a guy tried to stick up for you, you'd probably have your gun to his head in an instant!"
The spy frowned sharply, crinkling her face "Who asked you, kid? You probably couldn't protect a girl if you tried with that little slingshot of yours!"
The boy rubbed his nose with the back of his hand. "Bah! Who says I'd want to? I'd want my girl to be at least as brave as me and not helpless either. You know, sort of like you and Alice."
"Alice?" Margarete scoffed, "Alice isn't that tough at all."
"Of course she is," Halley insisted. "Who else do you know who's brave enough to smack around supernatural beings with a copy of the Bible? And just think about all the crazy things she's seen, but she never gives up or just goes to hide somewhere and leave the dirty work to us. And without her, Yuri might just go crazy. I mean, who but Alice could face his inner demons?"
"I guess you really do have a point," Margarete conceded.
