[August 23, 2008][Tales of Legendia] Cross-Cultural Overtures
Title: Cross-Cultural Overtures
Day/Theme: Aug. 23, 2008 "Understand my hate for you"
Series: Tales of Legendia
Character/Pairing: Fenimore -> Senel, main party
Rating: PG-13
The trip to the Ferines' settlement turned out to be more than one day's walk and so the group picked a spot to spend the night along the way. While Moses and Norma snored away and Will and Jay discussed some of the key tenets of international diplomacy, Chloe and Senel went outside for another late night training session. Fenimore watched them go, nervously fiddling with her hair. She was anxious to speak with Senel privately and had hoped an evening camping out would provide an opportunity to do so, but it seemed that procuring such a meeting would require more direct effort than she had expected.
It was hard for her to build up the resolve to approach him, particularly when she couldn't use Shirley as an excuse. He had proved to be so strong and such a kind brother, but he was still an Orerines man. Female Orerines had been involved in her torture and imprisonment as well, but it was the men who had left the deepest scars on her psyche. Dark thoughts flooded her mind as their words came back to her, "The Radiant aren't lie us- they aren't even human! No reason not to use them as we like. It isn't rape if she isn't human."
The night was mild, but the chill that shook her caused Fenimore to clutch herself tightly, struggling to make the memories of all the horrors that had marked her capture and arrival on the Legacy fade away. It was no use. Hard as it was to speak with Senel, it was worse still to lie here in the dark, assaulted by the fragments of terror that haunted her lonely hours. "Umm, excuse me," she approached the two warriors. They were clearly tiring after their long day. "Can I talk to you, Senel?"
"Uh, sure, Fenimore. What do you want?" he asked, following her a short distance away into the trees.
"I don't want this to change anything between us, Senel, but I wanted to tell you that all by yourself you've managed to do more than anyone else to restore my trust in the Orerines. Actually, I even have a bit of a crush on you."
"Well, uh, Fenimore," Senel stammered, "I, um, I think you're a nice person, but-"
"Don't," she stopped him gently, "You don't need to excuse yourself of say anything. I'm still not ready to fully trust an Orerines yet- let alone fall in love with one, but I don't know how much we'll be seeing each other anymore and I wanted to be up front with you."
He lost that surprised look and nodded calmly. "I see. It makes sense. Thank you, Fenimore."
