[3 Sept] [Harry Potter] Precedence

Title: Precedence
Day/Theme: 3 Sept / being as yet but a girl
Series: Harry Potter
Character/Pairing: Bellatrix Black and Lucius Malfoy
Rating: PG
A/N: Not quite what I was hoping it would be, as I'm sliding in under the wire. ;)

“You, first-year,” Malfoy said, a threatening tone in his voice, “need to learn your place. Black or not, you’ll find we’re not all here to kiss those prettily shined boots of yours.”

Bellatrix’s eyes flashed impudently. “How do you dare you talk to me like that?” She planted her hands firmly on her hips. Behind her, her cousin Magdalena was whispering words of warning, and the older boys standing with Malfoy were grinning and snickering. “I’ll not be treated in this fashion!”

Almost lazily, Malfoy slid his wand out of his robes. “Last warning, Black.”

She stamped her foot, tossing her ringlet curls. “How dare you!”

Bellatrix hardly saw the strike coming. One second she was on her feet, and the next, there was a searing pain in her arm, and she had crashed violently to the floor, cracking her head against the cold stone of the Slytherin common room.

Her lower lip trembled threateningly, but Bellatrix refused to cry. She felt a tear sting at her, but she’d be damned if she’d let it fall, not in front of him, not in front of Malfoy.

“You’re a spirited girl, Black,” Malfoy sneered, looking down at her, “and someday you’ll take your rightful place in Slytherin House. But you’ve got a bit of growing up to do first.” He started to walk away, then paused, turning in his step. The smirk melted slowly into a grin. “You shouldn’t feel bad,” he added, in that drawl of his that made Bellatrix want to hit him on the mouth. “When I threw that curse on Lestrange last year, he cried.”
