Notes: mention of death, cancer, torture, etc. Not fluffy at all.
Things the SGC doesn't want you to know.
Death before the desk
The statistics say 1/3 of all people who go off world will die on a mission. The only reason this number is so low is because I've included civilians in this equation and they aren't exposed to as much danger. Among military personnelnearly 2/3's die. We rarely recover the bodies. I've buried too many empty coffins.
There's a cream for that
Of the people who survive long enough to get put in an administrative position, half will get cancer. It's not the missions themselves, it's the pre-mission, post-mission, something-weird-is-going-on exams that are part of life at the SGC. SGC personnel who work off world are exposed to more radiation (from X-rays, CT scans, MRIs, etc.) than a radiologist moonlighting at a nuclear power plant, in Chenobyl. You think I'm exaggerating but I've seen the studies and reports. The most common are brain tumours, then leukemia.
I spy with my little eye
One of the many prices you will pay if you join the SGC is giving up your privacy. You will be watched, your phone and computer bugged, your mail read and your every action scrutinized. You may learn to ignore it, to make yourself oblivious to it, but I never did. Having every indiscretion viewed under a microscope can make even the greatest people seem like monsters. Most of us have given up on the illusion of a personal life rather than put up with the judgement of people who will never really know us.
Loose lips(sink ships)
The optimist in my likes to think that people who talk, who share this secret with a husband, a wife, a sibling, a best friend, the people who just can't stop themselves from sharing something this amazing and profound get sent off world to a picturesque little planet with a disabled DHD and a lot of supplies. Guilty for having talked, for trapping their confidant off world, never to return, but alive. Realistically, I've spent more time on base than anyone and I've never seen anyone sent through the gate in the dead of night, a hurriedly packed suitcase under their arm. I'm not sure what actually happens to people who break their silence, and I'll never ask.
You can't go home again
Being here changes you, and not for the better. I've seen good men and women twisted by this place. The losses kill you slowly. The worst scars most of us wear are on the inside. I've seen people tortured into madness, and locked away in a military mental hospital. The sole survivor of a team eat the nozzle of their gun. Jack hasn't been the same since he was tortured by Ba'al. Maybe it was the repeated exposure to the sarcophagus.Maybe you didn't noticed, but he was different after that, something broke and it never really fixed itself.
Cassie, sweetheart, I know how much you want to be apart of the SGC. How you want to please and honour your mother. Believe me, I understand the allure more than most, but I want better for you. Please reconsider.
