Series: Original (Messina)

"What was that?" Ginjo wondered, peering out at the encampment below.
"I think one of those flying explosions must have hit the tents," Kira gasped, pointing at the flames dancing along the edge of some stacked supplied on the ground below. From there, everyone quickly followed the line from her finger to the blackened and flattened remnants of several parts of the field hospital.

"Uncle Alywin!" Ran gasped. They had left the general on his way back down to visit and comfort the wounded.

"Christine!" Seif choked, his voice struggling out at a mere whisper. Kira glanced at the sandy-haired knight, unsure of what he had said, but aware of his alarm.

"You can't all just abandon your posts!" GInjo worried in a hushed tone.

"Let them go," Kira said, knowing that with such concerns on their minds that none of the Holy Knights could simply watch from the wall top. "We'll hold down the fort for them."

Ran and Li moved toward the steps, being sure to keep their heads low so as not to provide clear targets for enemy snipers. Seif trailed behind them, moving more apprehensively, as if carried by the ominous feeling that his speed in arriving at the site of the blast would not alter the outcome of the attack. Tetsu rose to follow them, but Kira held him back, pulling on his loose sleeve.

"I'm going too," Rowan declared, brushing away Kira's hand as she attempted to stop him as well. His voice was unwavering as he explained himself. "If the worst has happened, I think Seif will need me."

Kira could feel fear welling up in her heart where before there had been only surprise and shock. What she often thought of as Rowan's pessimism could now very well be something more like realism. Tetsu frowned and twisted a strand of his hair anxiously between his fingers. Another shell streaked high over the battlefield, crashing into the wall below them. "Ah!" Tetsu yelled in a light voice as the entire fortification seemed to shake.

"Goddess preserve us all!" Ginjo breathed, clutching his staff to his chest. "That's no magic! It's some sort of machine!"

Tetsu reached gingerly toward Kiralesca. "It's okay," she soothed him as he grabbed onto her arm for support amidst the fearful trembling of the stones. Kira's narrow eyes darted back and forth nervously, "Perhaps this is the same thing that blackened those beams in the ruined town we saw."

"Stands to reason," Ginjo agreed, sliding to the ground to keep his knees from knocking.
