[August 14, 2008][Tales of the Abyss] Matters of Succession

Title: Matters of Succession
Day/Theme: Aug. 14, 2008 "Raison d'etre"
Series: Tales of the Abyss (set several years post-game)
Character/Pairing: Natalia (past Asch/Natalia), Tear/Luke
Rating: PG

"I'm still so sorry," Tear said, "Sometimes I feel so guilty that Luke was the one who came back."

"Please don't," the queen stopped her. "I still think of him more than I should. And now while I need to be securing our country's future with a good marriage... Putting Asch from my mind...it's something I have to do."

Tear rose from her kneeling position and cautiously approached the queen. Because of their long relationship and familiarity, she hoped that Natalia would not be offended by the break in formality. "You know, I used to think you were a very selfish person. ...But that was a long time ago now. I think you're willing to be as selfless as necessary for the sake of Kimlasca. And while you need to think of the succession, don't push yourself into something you can't handle. You're not the last of your royal line, remember?"

Natalia, far from being insulted, was actually amused. "I can be sure that you're not flattering me," she laughed daintily, covering her mouth with a gloved hand, "You've always been so honest. Of course," the queen smirked, "You know that Luke would be next one the crown would pass to..."

"Ugh!" Tear gasped, "Are you sure? Uh...I don't think anyone involved would particularly enjoy that."

One of the guards within hearing range chuckled audibly. It was clear that he knew Luke.

Natalia became pensive again as the light moment passed. "Perhaps my father's kindness has harmed me in this respect. He never found another fiancé for me after Asch's death. So here I am, forced to chose myself."

"I suppose the only other advice I can give is to pick a consort who cares as much about Kimlasca as you do," Tear said. She stepped back apologetically and knelt down again.

This time Natalia rose and approached Tear. Tear uneasily stood up again, "Wh-what is it?"

The queen embraced her tenderly in a friendly hug. "You understand me well. Just as you live for Luke and your children, I live for Kimlasca."

"I'm sure that somewhere out there is a man who, while he might not love you like Asch did, loves Kimlasca so much that he'd do anything to give it a brighter future."

"Tear, you're so realistic," Natalia noted. She paused and moved back toward her throne. "I was actually starting to wonder what Guy is doing these days..."
