When I was four years old, my father promised me that he would live forever and I believed him.

When I was fourteen, I thought I didn’t care if he kept that promise.

When I was twenty-four, I knew that he couldn’t possibly but thought it was sweet of him to say it.

When I was thirty-four I knew he couldn’t live forever, but I thought it would be fun to see him try.

When I was forty-four I realized that it was fun to see him try but I knew that time was getting short on the ground.

When I was fifty-one I looked at his headstone and I realized that I was wrong. He couldn’t live forever, but I hadn’t really known it.

I stood at my father's grave, still a little girl inside,I realized that I had believed that he really would keep his promise and live forever.
