[August 7, 2008][Suikoden III] On His Trail
Title: On His Trail
Day/Theme: Aug. 7, 2008 "Somewhere just left of the point of nowhere"
Series: Suikoden III
Character/Pairing: Yun
Rating: PG
Working on an idea that's been floating around my mind for weeks now...
Yun was aware of the presence of a man in the forest even before she saw him. For someone so large, he stepped quite lightly, but the impressions left by his boots were still visible, along with the broken twigs that he had snapped while brushing past bushes and brambles. More obvious evidence was presented where he had grown impatient with the undergrowth and hacked the plants out of his way.
Yun lifted a battered leaf and examined the cut. It was a very clean slice. Obviously the blade involved had been quite sharp and well-handled. It was disrespectful to treat the forest like that- chopping off or stamping down anything that got in your way just because it caused you a bit of inconvenience.
The frightful thing about the man who had intentionally strayed off the forest path was not knowing how close by he might be. The signs she was using to track him meandered here and there, wrapping around thickets and the thick-trunked, centuries-old guardians of the forest. Despite his largely mysterious trajectory, it gradually became clear ot her that he must be attempting to find the village.
If he were lost, he could just exercise some common sense and stay in one place so it would be easier for any companions he might have to find him or use the moss on the tree trunks to find north. The women of the village usually whistled to each other to keep track of their locations when they went into the further depths of the forest. Whistling was a crucial part of any girl's training, as it would keep her from being stranded anywhere in Kuput's vast expanse.
Having already picked the plants Great Auntie required, Yun found herself caught between the urge to dutifully head straight back to the village the way she had come, hoping she would not cross paths with the wandering man, and the desire to put what small tracking skills she possessed to use to follow the man and spy on him, perhaps to discover what sort of person had come to engage in such a futile search. She might discover something she could tell her sisters to help them better repel outside interest. Even if the veil of magic covering the village was not punctured, it did not mean it would be a waste to spend time strengthening it.
