[August 3, 2008][Atsu-hime] For the Shogun's Amusement

Title: For the Shogun's Amusement
Day/Theme: Aug. 3, 2008
Series: Atsu-hime
Character/Pairing: Iesada, Yoshinobu
Rating: PG
Goes with episode 24

Iesada carelessly leapt down from the tall stack of tatami mats. He yawned. Yoshinobu eyed him seriously. Hotta and several others smiled indulgently, allowing their eccentric shogun his bizarre pleasures- with a little luck, it wouldn't be much longer until he was replaced by a more skillful successor, one with the power to shape the country with his own two hands instead of merely clowning around.

Iesada tossed his hat aside and it was carefully scooped up by an aide. What would Atsu say, he wondered, when he told her hat he had played the fool again, and in front of Harris too. ...It was just that he had felt so...so bored. And when he acted impulsively, jumping about and roasting rice crackers and doing whatever came to mind, it not only livened up his day, but it furthered his well-crafted illusion of foolishness. It was not easy to instantly leave behind the life he had been living until he met her.

"You try it too!" he commanded Yoshinobu impishly, pointing up at the towering pile.

Yoshinobu was clearly not amused. He glanced up at the stack, then for a split second into the face of the shogun, and finally back to the floor. He sighed, resigned. There was no way this could end well. "Yes, Your Excellency," he said. He bowed, stood, and scrambled to pull himself onto the top of the tatami.

"You know there was a step in back, right?" Iesada chirped as soon as Yoshinobu had managed to situated himself on top.

The head of the Hitotsubashi house caught his breath and narrowed his eyes, but did not respond to this sudden piece of information. He wouldn't put anything past Iesada. Most of those still assembled in the room were merely glad that they had not been chosen to participate in this pointless spectacle to somehow amuse or appease the shogun.

"Now! Stand up!" Iesada called raucously, waving his arms. Yoshinobu reluctantly complied.

Iesada cocked his head to the side thoughtfully. All eyes were on the shogun as they waited to see what he would say next. His wily smile spread across his face. "Next, dance!"

Yoshinobu held back a groan as he lifted his arms and took a few cautious steps. Iesada laughed noisily, reveling in the sight, and continued to laugh as the stack shook, and Yoshinobu, much to the concern of the other onlookers, fell to the ground.
