Donos was woken up by the ringing of a cell phone – not his own. He moaned and reached for it on the nightstand.
“Yeah?”
“Uh, it’s Kev. Is Lynn around?”
Donos looked to the other side of the bed where Lynn was curled up under the blanket; only her dark hair that she as letting grow right now was visible.
“Sorry, she isn’t awake yet. You woke the wrong person,” Donos said conversationally while he got out of bed.
“And you are?”
“Donald Myers.”
“The famous Donos? Your reputation precedes you.”
Only now did it occur to Donos that Kev might get it all wrong, that he might think that Donos and Lynn were in bed together while this was not the case.
“Listen, Kev, me and Lynn, it’s not what you might think.”
“You think that just because you answered the phone, I think that you’re sleeping with Lynn?”
Lynn had once mentioned that Kev was very direct and to the point but Donos had never expected his partner’s boyfriend to be that outspoken.
“I trust Lynn,” Kev explained. “I have to seeing that I’m in New York and she isn’t. I trusted her enough to ask her to look after Wes once.”
“You know she slept with him back then, don’t you?”
Donos had left his room and stood in the corridor so he wouldn’t wake Lynn.
“WHAT?!”
Apparently, Kev hadn’t known.
“Oh, come on, don’t be mad at her. You weren’t even dating back then. It was a one time thing.”
“How come you know about it and I don’t?” Kev asked, trying to calm down. It wasn’t as if he was entitled to Lynn but for some reason, it bothered him that Donos who Lynn had only known for a few months knew about it and he had to find out through him.
That was a good question. A good question Donos didn’t know the answer to. “Maybe because I’m her partner and you’re her boyfriend?” Donos suggested tentatively.
“Maybe,” Kev sighed. “It doesn’t matter,” he then decided. “It’s better if you don’t tell her I know. I won’t mention it.”
“You’re obviously not the jealous type,” Donos noted.
“I live too far away to be jealous. It I spent all my time thinking about how Lynn could cheat on me … I don’t even want to think about it. Besides, I would think of you as a rival because she’s been talking about you a lot since you got on the team.” Kev laughed a pleasant laughter as if to make sure Donos knew he didn’t want to establish any form of rivalry. “But now that we’re at it, care to tell me why you answered the phone?”
“We were hanging out in my room last night sharing past experiences with people we worked with in the past and must have fallen asleep. It has happened a couple of times because we try to do a lot together to enforce our bond and sometimes it gets late.”
So she tells me; we used to do the same. And there’s something else she tells me: that you’re troubled and emotionally distant.”
“Well, you’re an ageless, obsessive compulsive smartass.”
“Does she really say that?” Kev made a dramatic pause and Donos wondered about his reaction. “That girl just gets me.”
Donos really didn’t know what to say. He had heard a lot about Kev Darren due to his close association with Lynn but talking to the man was something entirely different. He really seemed like a good boyfriend. “So, Donos, tell me, how do you feel about Lynn?”
“She is a very likeable woman when you get past her think barriers. Her tomboyish nature can be difficult to get used to at first but all in all it makes her surprisingly easy to work with because she isn’t a diva.”
Kev didn’t answer for a few seconds and Donos wondered if he had said something wrong. “Wow,” he finally said. “I don’t think I’d be so eloquent about it but it’s an impressive way of saying you like her.”
“I beg your pardon?”
“Come on, Donos, be a man. You can tell me you like Lynn. I figured it out myself after this short conversation and I’m not going to rub in the fact that she is my girl – that would be obnoxious. As long as you don’t try to snatch her away from me, I really don’t have a problem with it. Just promise me you’ll be a friend to her and look out for her.”
“That’s my job. I’m her partner,” Donos said perplexed, the words Kev had just said echoing in his head. Lynn’s boyfriend was extremely likable albeit a little bit eccentric in a good way. He loved her; that Donos was sure of.
“Thanks. Tell Lynn I’ll call her later. Nice talking to you.” With these words, Kev hung up. Donos stood in the corridor for some time thinking about what the other man had said.
He then returned to his room. Lynn was sitting in bed waiting.
“Your phone rang,” Donos explained holding up the phone and threw it towards her. “The boyfriend called.”
“I’ll have so much explaining to do,” Lynn sighed.
Donos said on the bed cross-legged. “Don’t worry. We just talked a bit; we got along surprisingly well. He seems to be a nice guy.”
“What did you talk about?” Lynn asked curiously.
Donos hesitated for a moment. He couldn’t possibly tell the truth about the conversation. “Boring guy stuff.”
“Don’t even tell me about it,” Lynn laughed pretending not to have noticed that Donos was lying; maybe to protect her, maybe to protect himself or maybe even Kev, a man she didn’t even know. She wouldn’t ask Kev about it; she didn’t need to know just like he didn’t know everything about her life. And if the guys were had forged a bond, it might be for the better.
