[July 7] [Yu-Gi-Oh GX] Pretending
Title: Pretending
Day/Theme: July 7 - domesticity of long-distance relationships
Series: Yu-Gi-Oh GX
Pairing: Marufuji Ryo/Edo Phoenix

It's Ryo who always calls and Edo always pretends that it annoys him. That he's not interested in the least in whatever Ryo has to say and, "I'm surprised you haven't given up yet, Hell Kaiser." Ryo simply chuckling a little under his breath and he always replies, "I'll give up when you start being honest, Phoenix."
They haven't seen each other face to face since the other world. Since that moment when Edo thought he was a dead man and snapped at Ryo to get Judai the hell out of there and their eyes had met in one simple moment of understanding.
When Edo made it back and found that Ryo hadn't he mourned, in his own way. By separating himself from Judai's little charmed circle (which he has never really been a part of to begin with) and throwing himself back into his life. His career.
When Judai called, months later, to tell him that Ryo had just been found on the beach and, yes, he's going to be fine Edo snapped back that he didn't care.
When Ryo calls a few weeks after that, Edo hangs up on him. Fully intent on that being the end of it.
Except Ryo keeps calling, and eventually Edo stops hanging up right off the bat (if only so he can hear Ryo's voice, although he'll never admit to it). The pair of them soon enough back to sniping at each other as they always have (although Ryo's mellowed a lot since coming back, almost like the way he was before the losing streak and his trip to hell and back) and Edo pretends that he doesn't find a strange sort of comfort in it.
Because they're not friends (they'll never manage that one) and they were never really lovers (unless you class it in the "bodies grinding" sense as opposed to the "hearts and flowers" sense, then maybe). All they are is rivals who vaguely keep in touch, and only because Ryo keeps phoning.
And Edo keeps pretending that he doesn't enjoy it.
