Title: The Best Defense
Day/Theme: 3: Preventive measures

Character/Pairing: Virginia/Wolf, as noticed by Acorn

“It isn’t going to work,” Acorn said suddenly. Virginia looked at the dwarf, startled.
“What won’t? Finding the mirror?”
“The mirror’s got nothing to do with it,” he jabbed his spoon at her. “Even if you find the thing, and go through it, you won’t be where you want to.”
“I just want to go home,” Virginia sighed. She was too tired to argue. “If we can just get back to the right world, we can get back to New York from there.”
“Home is where you keep your hearts,” Acorn said with an alarming grin. She squinted at him and almost corrected him, then shook her head.
“Close enough.”
“And speaking of hearts,” the dwarf went on. “That’s the part that isn’t going to work.”
“My heart’s not going to work?”
“It’s gonna work just fine, despite the efforts you’ve made to keep it from that.”
“I haven’t done anything!” She heard her voice go a little higher and winced inwardly. The last thing she needed was relationship advice from a convict dwarf hiding out in an enchanted swamp. Acorn gave her a stern look with his lopsided eyes. If it had been anything sharper than a spoon in his hands, she might’ve been frightened.
“Building brick houses won’t keep the wolves out,” he said. “Best you can do is prepare for when they get in.”
