[July 2] [Labyrinth] Inevitable
Title: Inevitable
Day/Theme: 2: All this leads to one outcome
Series:Labyrinth
Character/Pairing: Sarah/Jareth
Rating: PG
Sarah wondered sometimes if the Labyrinth was aware. The amount of chaos that went on in its walls couldn’t be completely contained. Maybe it had been absorbed into the walls, and the walls themselves became part of the chaos, twisting and turning back on itself with no design at all but its own. Maybe the Labyrinth itself was one of Jareth’s subjects, an immense, sprawling goblin that the other, lesser goblins lived on like parasites, that still obeyed its King.
Maybe the Labyrinth was instead, Jareth, leaving only a human-shaped part of itself in the middle to be its eyes and voice. Because it didn’t seem possible that lifeless stone and twisted hedge could hold the amount of energy she could feel vibrating around her. It was like it could see her as she walked by and feel her when she took a step or touched a wall. When she spoke to one or the others, the walls felt like they were listening.
What if the Labyrinth were aware then? Was it deliberately leading her astray? She kept running into trouble, but then she was always finding someone to help her, too. Was the Labyrinth also trying to help her? It put both harm and help in her way, but the only time she had been really in danger was when Jareth took personal action.
If it was a part of Jareth or one of his subjects, or if he just had power over it, did he want her to solve it or not? She had been trying to think of a way to outwit him, knowing how easily he could fluster her. She had hoped that finding some reason to his behavior would help her plan. But reason was in short supply in the Labyrinth. Every individual thing marched to entirely different individual beats, many of which she were sure hadn’t come from anything resembling a drum.
The one constant was the Castle at the Center. She didn’t know who or what the Labyrinth really was, who or what Jareth really was, if he really wanted her brother for a new goblin, or just felt entitled to do so since the Words had been Said, or, as some part of her feared (and hoped) if it was all part of some plan to bring her there.
She blushed and ducked her head to hide it every time she wondered that. The story she had told Toby came back to her. Had he heard her telling it? Was this punishment for not really believing it?
But she had. She had known who he was, the moment he came in through her window. Maybe she hadn’t really expected it to be true, but in her heart of hearts she had believed. Did she believe that the King of the Goblins really had fallen in love with her? It didn’t seem likely, but why else had he come to the room? Toby had already been taken at that point. He didn’t need to make an appearance. He certainly didn’t need to take her to the Labyrinth, or offer her any chance at getting Toby back.
Unless… Toby wasn’t the prize. Just the bait. And her 13 hours was just incentive to hurry. Maybe she didn’t have to solve the Labyrinth. Maybe she just had to go forward, willing, and the path would unroll right to the Castle gates.
And maybe being overly dramatic is what got you in this mess, she reminded herself sternly. It didn’t matter. She was going to the Castle at the Center of the Labyrinth, with or without help, whether he wanted her to or not. She looked up over the wall again to see a Castle tower. She got her bearings again and moved on.
