[June 28][Original] What's the point?
Title: What's the point?
Day/Theme: June 28 / at the end of the day, you're another day older
Series: Original / Misfits
Character/Pairing: Dennis Lawson, Stella West (slight Dennis/Stella).
Rating: I don't believe in ratings but I'd day PG
"We need to run a background check," Stella decided. The blond woman in her twenties had spread out files all over the floor in what Dennis thought to be an excellent technique to cover the entire carpet. Maybe he should ask her how she did it.
"What's the point of the investigation?" he asked. He was sitting on the bed with a coffee mug in his hand. When he had woken up about an hour ago, he had not voluntarily done so but because Stella had stormed in to convert the room into her private office -- it wasn't as if she had her own apartment.
She looked up; astonishment about the question on her face. "What do you mean? We have to prove that those mean really raped and murdered the victim."
"Do we? I mean, seriously, what's the point? One of the guys is already dead; the other is in prison with a life sentence without the possibility of parole. It doesn't matter if he killed one more girl or not."
"But the family wants closure, Dennis," Stella insisted. She had stopped her work and was looking at him now trying to understand why he had suddenly so out of character. He had been so excited about this case only a few days ago and now he slept in, sat in bed while she did most of the work and wasn't centered. Stella had already approached Dennis' closest friend about it but he had told her that he didn't know what was going on -- Stella knew he was lying.
"It won't change the fact that this woman is dead." Dennis spoke without any hint of emotion in his voice.
"On a psychological level, it might be easier if the family has a face to associate with the victim's murder," Stella tried to defend why they were on his case. "Besides, we can't just decide that there is no point to continue the investigation. We have our suspects; our job is to solve the murder, not to question it. Have you ever thought that we might discover that things aren't what they seem to be?"
Dennis rolled his eyes at his partner's last remark. "Please, star, we both know those men did it. We're not going to find out that they are not the murderers we're looking for and someone who hasn't already been brought to justice is the man we're looking for. Want to know how I know? Because we're neither a crime novel not CSI. Things are exactly what they seem. At least in this case and we both know it."
"You seem jaded." Stella who had gotten up sat down on the bed a few inches away from him so she could look at him. "What's going on with you?"
"I ... I want my life to be meaningful, Star," he whispered. "I know this sounds silly but I want to make a contribution and by persecuting those two men ... what's the point? I'm not getting younger and my live expectation isn's as high as it is in other careers. I know this and I decided to do this kob because I thought it would be meaningful to me but this case has run its course and I'm wasting my time. The time I could be spending on something important."
Stella took his hand into hers. "What happened, Dennis? Tell me." She spoke in a low voice, barely audible. "You can trust me, no matter what happened."
He looked her in the eyes; his own eyes were full of tears. It was surprising to see him like this but Stella didn't look away. She held his gaze instead.
"My ... my father died. He wasn't old enough zo die. He was in his prime and I know I'm going to die sooner or later -- most likely sooner -- and I want to spend my life the best I can." His voice broke and he started to weep like a child.
Stella knew there was no point to saying anything. She pulled him into her arms and held him while he cried at the fact that his father had died; at the fact that nobody was immortal.
