[June 17, 2008] [Twilight] Thereness

Title: Thereness
Day/Theme: June 17 -- "and she keeps calling me back again"
Series: Twilight
Character/Pairing: Edward, Edward/Bella
Summary: "A DEFINITION NOT FOUND IN THE DICTIONARY -- Not leaving: an act of trust and love, often deciphered by children." -- Markus Zusak, "The Book Thief"

The hospital reeks.

He can smell the blood of course; in fact he can smell it everywhere. It drenches the place. But it’s surrounded by the tangy, sour scent of morphine and plastic and unpronounceable chemicals until it’s completely unappealing and, frankly, nauseating.

Which is just one more reason why he absolutely refuses to leave Bella’s room -- even though she’s got just as many IVs in her as everybody else, making her smell definitely not right. Still, if he leans in close enough, close enough to trace his lips along her jawline and make her heart monitor speed up (even when she’s practically unconscious, something that makes him smile), and he can completely forget everything about where they are and who they are and...

--her screams ringing in his ears and the taste of her blood on his tongue--

Edward growls loudly and stands up, turning to the window and gripping the ledge tight enough to hear the fake wood crackle.

"Edward?"

Shit. He turns and tries to hide his agitation, even though he knows it’s almost pointless. So damn perceptive… "Sorry. I woke you."

Bella looks up at him through bleary, concerned eyes. "Edward, don’t leave..." her eyes drift to a close and her breathing evens out until he knows she’s asleep again. "Don’t leave..."

He watches her sleep for awhile, retracing arguments in his head in a cycle so worn and familiar it’s absolutely pathetic. He already knows what the conclusion of the argument is.

So he lays down in the bed next to her and traces a long, white finger up and down her arm, her collarbone, her cheek.

He will not leave.
