I will love her forever, he told himself. And for a while, he believed it. Until he remembered that humans didn’t have forever. Unicorns did. He would love her as long as he was able, but that was all.

If she loved him, she could love him forever. If she loved him. She had warned him, before the magician turned her back, that she would not be able to love him when she was a unicorn again. Now, did she feel anything for him but the memory of what their love had felt like and the regret for what might’ve been? He didn’t know. She hadn’t stayed. That story was hers, not his.

Humans didn’t have any right to promise forever, he thought in his misery. Unicorns did, but they made no promises.
