It wasn’t as if the Marina hadn’t been to a fancy banquet before. She had been practically raised on them. It wasn’t as if the girl had never seen a proper woman dressed to the nines in finery, her mother had been that kind of a woman. It wasn’t as if she had never had a suitor tell her that she was the sun, the moon, and the stars before, she had many suitors before she left home. Most of them wanted her father’s money and status.

But somehow this was different. It was more exciting. Maybe it was because the suitor was an elegant exotic slightly older lady, or maybe because she had been away from finery for so long. Maybe it was because her father’s name had nothing to do with it this time. There had to be a rational explanation for it.

She could feel her heart beating fast in her chest nonetheless.
