Summary: Zita wondered if it was alright to be this relieved.
It probably shouldn't have brought relief. Her son was crying and her husband was grieving for a companion lost. Yet shouldn't couldn't find it in herself to even be sympathetic.
Tabbitha had long irritated her for reasons she preferred not to dwell on. The seeming intelligence in her eyes had made Zita uneasy. While she wasn't proud of herself for feeling almost happy, she couldn't find it in herself to be sad either. The Syvrin were an intelligent species, smarter than any existing animal. It was uncertain if they were as smart or smarter than humans but testing had revealed that, if started at a young age, the Syvrin could acquire the vocabulary level of an older toddler. If they had the digits for it, perhaps they would be proficient in sign language as Apes were but as it was, the four long-fingered limbs of the Syvrin were more suitable to strictly walking or gripping. Large as a Foxhound, the Syvrin were omnivores.
Zita watched with an indifferent gaze as Tabbitha's body was lowered onto the pyre, cremation the only suitable way of disposing of a Syvrin body, though her husband would be loath to use the term. As the body was lite and the blaze reached a crescendo, Zita allowed a smile to curl her lips upward.
