She wasn’t really a princess. But now that she was away from home, without the support of her family, she was beginning to realize that she had been raised like one.

These days the pillows were too hard and too few, the sleeping bag was too old and worn, and sleep was too rare. Her joints ached every morning. She always had a headache. She never was able to get enough sleep.

She hated night. It was always easier to keep going when she had something to do, some goal to keep her occupied. At night she just lied there staring at the moon as her companions slept soundly. Her thoughts would always wander to how she had gone from falling asleep to her nursemaid’s beautiful singing to listening to two other adolescents snore.

As hard as it was, she didn’t regret it.
