Maxine McAllister sat in the lightest corner of the study room in the Sandoval University Magic Hall, inscribing a sigil into one of her gloves with a magic pen. She had practiced drawing it several times on a sheet of paper earlier in the day, but wanted to make sure that she got the spell exactly right to prevent unpredictable results. "There," she said. "That should do it."

Her boyfriend, Robert Terry, looked over her shoulder as she worked. "What are you working on there, Max?"

"It's a sleep spell," said Maxine, snapping one of her gloves onto her right hand. "The last time I went out to the supermarket, I was almost mugged. I'm not going out there again today without protection."

"Couldn't you just use a spell or something to zap the mugger?" he asked dryly.

Maxine shook her head. "Being inconspicuous is part of my responsibility as a magician. If I went out there and started hurling fireballs and lightning bolts around, I'd look like a maniac."

"I see your point."  Bob looked up at the clock in the room, and realized that he was in danger of running late for his meeting with the student executive committee.  "If you need someone to walk with you to the market, just wait for me by the front door, okay?"

"Don't worry about me," said Maxine. "I can handle myself just fine."

She wrapped her arms around Bob and kissed him on the cheek, but when she tried to break the embrace, he nearly fell over. "Whoa, Bob...you're so heavy."

Maxine turned around and noticed that Bob was resting on his shoulder, with his eyes closed and saliva dripping down the side of his cheek. "Bob? Sweetie?"

One look at her glove made Maxine realize that she had drawn the sigil palm-side up. While the spell had the effect she desired, she had chosen a bad time to use it, and now her boyfriend was in even greater danger of missing his meeting. "Shoot!" she groaned, taking the glove off and trying in vain to shake Bob and bring him back to consciousness. "I should have waited until I got outside to put these things on. I just hope the spell wears off soon..."
