[May 30, 2008][Original] He's All Smiles
Title: He's All Smiles
Day/Theme: May 30, 2008 "Safe and dry in my sea of troubles"
Series: Original (Navigator)
Character/Pairing: Arigh, Marta, May
Rating: PG
"Miss Duay," Arigh leaned over the cross-cultural communications officer, observing her work with his own omnipresent smile. "Are you popular in Lingwa?"
"I don't see how that has anything to do with anything, Lieutenant," Marta told him flatly, barely glancing up from her report.
"If I'm bugging you, you can always report me," Arigh shrugged.
"Well," Marta relented slightly, knowing that arguing with the Mongolian man would be worthless, "There is one thing I'd like to ask you, Lieutenant. Why do you wear that traditional outfit instead of an official uniform? I don't think that's standard for the Mars Defense Force of the UN Exploratory Team."
"It's not," Arigh agreed, "But an exception has been made in my case. And please, Miss Duay, call me Arigh."
"Is that professional?"
"I'm only a temp, Miss Duay. There's nothing wrong with a little friendliness around the ship," Arigh tried to convince here, "And since you're just about the only one who'll even talk to me, I've got to offer a bit of real kindness."
"Then let Ringo out of the storage hold. He didn't do anything to deserve being stuck down there," Marta urged, trying to use her in to accomplish something worthwhile, "He's no one to worry about, just a weird space drifter we picked up between Pluto and Lingwa. He's just an unlucky guy."
"Well, if it means so much to you," Arigh decided. He turned and waved to his large subordinate, who approached on cue. "KP, go let that vagabond have his freedom back."
"Yes, Sir," KP replied curtly, saluting and heading off to perform this task.
"Mind if I have a seat?" Arigh asked suavely. He didn't wait for an answer before sitting down on the corner of Marta's workstation.
Past the temporary commander, Marta could see May grinding her teeth and glaring at his back. The only crew member who seemed angrier at Arigh than May was Jorge. He had already secretly sent out a dispatch protesting the change of command and investigation as well as questioning Arigh's personal handling of the situation. Marta decided to continue her report and act like Arigh wasn't there. He just read what she wrote and smiled.
