[May 25] [Hikaru no Go] Stones on Narrow Spaces 25/?
Title: Stones in Narrow Spaces 25/?
Day/Theme: May 25 - You will excuse me if I skip the masquerade
Series: Hikaru no Go
Character/Pairing: none
Rating: General
--------------
The last day of the Spring Go Exhibition saw Shindou and Ogata facing off again, entirely by accident. Kurata had phoned to explain that he was in hospital from food poisoning, and Shindou was to take his place.
" 'Shindou, wake up now. You're playing at the Spring Go Exhibition', just like that," Shindou said on the train, lowering his voice to imitate Kurata's tones. "Who does he think he is?"
"He's the man you owe a favour to," Touya said, doing his best to be patient; Shindou had been grumbling without pause for the last fifteen minutes.
"He didn't even say who he was supposed to be playing!" Shindou said. He had tried to contact the authorities at the Spring Go Exhbition but either they were too busy to answer him, or he had the wrong number. "Maybe he's not really ill--maybe he just wants to get out of the whole thing," he speculated darkly.
Shaking his head, Touya said, "I thought you said that Kurata-san liked exhibitions."
"Because he likes the attention! All those people asking him for autographs... he just eats it up. He should just wear a costume, like at a masquerade." His voice was rising and Touya nudged him in a bid to get him to shut up, but Shindou went on, "There's probably a catch somewhere!" He finally subsided when a couple of commuters looked at him pointedly.
Frankly, Touya thought that Shindou's frustration stemed from more than just the lack of knowledge about the identity of his opponent-to-be at the exhibition game. The stolen gobans still weighed heavily on Shindou. And now they were going to the venue where one of them had been stolen.
The Heian goban, he understood from Shindou, had been discovered in a storeroom about five years ago--"I wonder how many antique gobans are rotting in storerooms around the country," Shindou had mused--and was sold to Ito Kaoru. It became known as the infamous haunted goban after that, but now it was worth more money than what Touya and Shindou made in a year.
Shindou led the way when they exited the station, but then again, Shindou was more familar with public Go events than Touya. Among young pros, Touya was unusual in that he rarely participated in such events, while Shindou could probably recite the names of ramen restaurants within ten minutes of each venue.
They reached the exhibition venue and the first person they met was Ogata, wearing a kimono.
