[May 23, 2008][Suikoden V] Diamond in the Rough

Title: Diamond in the Rough
Day/Theme: May 23, 2008 "Who can love you and still be standing?"
Series: Suikoden V
Character/Pairing: Shula Valya, Lucas, Sasarai
Rating: G

When Shula Valya came to Crystal Valley, everyone looked. Of course, that was exactly the reaction he had been hoping for. "You still have it, old friend," he congratulated himself. It was the rare fifty-year-old man who attracted these kinds of looks in the streets of Harmonia. Both young girls and their mothers paused in the street to gaze appreciatively on his fine form. He flattered them with a wave of his ever-present fan and a fluttering of his long eyelashes.

The bishop escorting him looked a little annoyed at this flirtatious dawdling. Shula chose to regard this as a small display of jealousy at the way his Armesian comrade pulled all the attention away from the Harmonian himself. "Come on, come on," the blond man complained.

"Now Bishop Orsini," Shula tried to soothe the growing frustration of the little man, "It's all in good fun. I am getting to know your lovely people and I quite enjoy it."

"Bah! That's fine on your own time, but we have a date to keep with poor Bishop Sasarai, who must be wondering why you're talking so long just to make the walk across the valley."

"Well, this is an enormous city," the ambassador countered, glancing at his gorgeous reflection in a dozen mirrors simultaneously as they passed a stand full of them.

"This is the short way across and you know it!" the bishop fussed. He had not expected a man this age, particularly one so accomplished, to be such a handful. Had he known in advance, he would've left the job of playing host to the flamboyant man to some other, younger official. Katsusa might have been up for the task.

"I think I met Sasarai once before." Shula thought for a moment about his past encounters with the Harmonian government. There had been plenty of interchangeable blue-clad folk involved in his past associations with this nation. It was Sasarai's child-like face and natural grace that had cemented the bright-eyed bishop in his mind. Though dressed and speaking like all the others, he had been different somehow.

"I wouldn't be surprised," Lucas admitted, "Since the troubles in 482, it seems like everyone knows Sasarai.
"
"I met him before that." Shula paused to blow a kiss to a young man staring at him across the market.

Lucas frowned.

"I think I rather liked him."
