[May 15, 2008][Suikoden] The Sympathy Seat
Title: The Sympathy Seat
Day/Theme: May 15, 2008 "His dreams have lost some grandeur coming true"
Series: Suikoden-related
Character/Pairing: Teodor, Kirsten, Sasarai, Lucas
Rating: PG
This wasn't exactly what Teodor had expected when he had campaigned to fill his late wife's Counsel seat. He sat in his new place in a wooden chair at the round Counsel table, staring despondently down at the tabletop. He hadn't meant the campaign so much to actually promote himself as a candidate as to direct attention to the fate of Kirsten. Teodor was much more sad than angry. He had no interest in tracking the rumors that said another Counsel member gave the order. He merely wanted them to remember his wife and to think about her goals.
"You seem exceptionally glum for a newly elected Counsel member," Gavelle observed, patting his younger colleague comfortingly on the shoulder.
"Just be sure not to let Lucas see you looking like that," Sasarai added. "We all know that it was still quite recently that you lose Kirsten, but he has been gunning for a Counsel seat for some time now and his feelings have probably been a little bent by our turning him down."
Teodor's face fell even further. He wished Lucas had been elected. It was well known that Lucas had been preparing for this step in his career for years. Teodor had little in the way of leadership skills and was more interested in pursuing his many hobbies and pet projects than working in the government. It had even been Kirsten and his parents who had convinced him to study and be ordained as a priest. He practically threw the training away. He wasn't attached to any church and this was his first real job in years. "Some crummy Counsel member I'm shaping up to be," he thought sadly.
And then his drooping eyelids flew open as he realized suddenly that that might have been the reason he had been picked. He was quiet and not very opinionated- the perfect filler Counsel member. A troublesome cleric had been replaced by one who was little more than a mannequin. "I can't allow myself to be the puppet they mean me to be," he resolved, looking around the table at the brood of vipers he found he had stepped into. How could he tell which of them to fear? Some, like Sasarai, looked innocent enough, but merely looking was no way to tell. He would have to simply avoid them all.
"It's every man for himself out here," he tried to steel his mind and heart for the difficult path ahead of him, knowing he was still so weak. He would, albeit very carefully, take up Kirsten's banner and step into her shoes. A Progressive would not take things lying down.
