It had been a mantra. Something he had repeated over and over, trying to convince himself and the universe that what he was doing was right, that even if it hurt him, it wouldn't matter 'cause he would right everything, make things good again. When the truth had hit him, that it could never be the same again, he had wanted to laugh. He had wanted to laugh so hard that he cried and would forget what had been so goddamn fucking funny in the first place.
He knew it wasn't pity but it sure looked it to him and he knew she pitied him, even if Sora hadn't. He knew that and sometimes he had wondered if maybe Sora felt that way too and was just better at hiding it than Kairi.
He could still hear their words, haunting him ever since they had first been spoken.
Are you alright?
Riku, please, let us help you.
I'm fine, perfectly okay.
Sometimes he drove himself crazy and today was no different. When it had gotten to be too much, he had wandered over to the play island. It had taken a while, longer than it used to but finally he had made it and the first place he had gone was the fighting area, the place where he and Sora had fought with wooden swords. For the longest time they had thought of it as theirs, Kairi, Selphie, Wakka and Tidus rarely went on the sword fighting area so Riku had allowed himself to think of it as ours, because as much as he shouldn't have, there was no denying that there was something.
So now Riku was sitting on the bent over papou tree, thinking, thoughts too muddled to make sense. So when he yelps, it's for no other reason than Sora sneaking up on him.
"What are you doing out here?"
