Once she'd told him, offhandedly, that, "I know how to distinguish my perfect man from the rest of the scum. He will be tall, and he shall sing Taiwanese pop songs without shame. Yeah. He will in fact sing Ken Zhu's "Here We Are"" to me. Then we'll know he's worthy."

He had patted her head then, and told her, "Well, good luck with that."

"They should measure up to you," she said. "You're the most perfect man I know."

"I wouldn't take it that far."

"But you are! Nobody can measure up to you. No one, no one, no one."

He smiled at her in a bemused sort of way, which made her go: "Oniichaaaaan~"

On the night of her birthday, there were tears in her eyes and sorrow in her heart. Then, the man she'd always considered her brother, her pillar, went onstage and began to sing.

"Here we are, it's not a perfect world..."

And she was struck then, as she was in the arms of a boy who never loved her, that if there was indeed such a thing as a perfect world, she'd love the man who was singing in broken Taiwanese as much as he loved her. That if there were such a thing as a perfect world, she'd see that the boy who had her in his arms had never really measured up to the man onstage, and will most likely never measure up to even just her expectations. But this was not a perfect world. And she didn't love the man that way, although sometimes she wished she did.
