Kaga stormed into the waiting room at the police station with an air of vengence following him like a cape. His entire stance radiated urgency, much like a sprinter who had outrun his track. "Anyone wants to tell me why Tsutsui is cuddling a goban and whispering 'my precious' to it?"
"That's my goban," Shindou said, looking up, not showing the least surprise at Kaga's appearance. He had already finished answering questions about his relationship with Tsutsui.
"Shindou," Touya said, objecting to the inappropriate reply.
The police officer who had apparently been shepherding Kaga cleared his throat noisily. "Kaga-sensei, you're supposed to be waiting outside..."
Kaga turned to him, bracing himself against the door frame so that he looked even more intimidating. "You said the police psychiatrist will be with him for a while more. Why can't I talk to him--them--in the meantime?" he asked, jerking his chin to include both Shindou and Touya.
"But-"
Kaga ignored him as he entered the waiting room and sat down on the table, his expression growing thoughtful for a moment before it reverted to his usual scornfulness. "I know it was your goban, Shindou," he said. "What I want to know is why."
"How should I know?" Shindou asked, bewildered. "What I want to know is how Tsutsui-san got hold of the goban in the first place. I'm pretty sure he didn't steal-"
"Of course he didn't! Steal a cheap goban like that?" Kaga scoffed.
Instantly Shindou's hackles grew, as Kaga no doubt intended. " 'Cheap goban'?"
"It's a cheap goban made of cassia wood, isn't it? It's the type usually bought by beginners," Kaga said. "Tsutsui would probably be embarrassed to be seen with it, if he were in his right mind."
Shindou gave a start. "What do you mean, 'in his right mind'? What's the matter with Tsutsui-san?" he asked in worry.
Touya noted that he had already forgetten the insult to his goban.
Kaga studied him for a moment longer. "Something got to him," he said finally.
The words chilled Touya's heart. He had sensed that it was not a matter of simple delusion or madness, but to have another person state it so baldly, was frightening in its own way. It was an answer to the question he had asked himself when he first encountered the scene in the living room.
They had had to wait for Iijima to summon more help before they could get to the police station, and it was a creepy experience, watching Tsutsui sitting with Shindou's goban.
Shindou looked as though he was struggling to understand. "What-"
Kaga leaped off the table. He stepped forward as though he was about to grab Shindou and shake him. Shindou, not at all wise to the shirt-grabbing ways of those older than him, flattened himself against his chair, increasing the distance between Kaga and him by a mere two centimeters.
But Kaga did not touch Shindou. He only came very near to Shindou, close enough for them to smell the cigarettes on his breath. "I said something got to him. Do you understand me?"
Touya understood him perfectly, but he was not the one being questioned. It was something he had feared ever since Kuwabara had told them what he knew about the Shuusaku goban.
Shindou was still stumbling. He stood up, his entire posture uneasy. "But I-"
"It all started with you!" Kaga said. He looked as though he would have liked to punch Shindou, or do something else equally damaging. "Strange stuff happens around you, Shindou, especially when they involve gobans. There's a connection between the Shuusaku goban and your own, isn't there? So tell me, Shindou, what is in that cheap goban of yours?"
Shindou staggered back and made the sound of someone running out of breath.
