Series: Original (Navigator)

"What's that?"

"What's what?" Captain Barrett asked, squinting in the vague hope that doing so would somehow improve her distance vision. Perhaps she needed to get her eyes checked when they went back to Charon. This wasn't the first time over the past few months that some younger crew member had pointed out some sight or phenomenon and she had been unable to see it until they were several yards closed.
"It looks like a ship," Priya answered. It wasn't Lingwan in make. She wasn't sure if it was an Earth vessel. They were too varied in make and model. But she knew it was too small to be the other UNS exploration ship, Serendipity.

"Looks like a science vessel from the Wakayama Science Facility on Charon," Marguerite guessed. "It's those purple bands on the side."

"Let's try and talk to them," the captain decided. It came from a supposedly friendly place after all. Janay was still a bit disappointed that her meeting with Jakob Marten from the UNS Serendipity had clued her in to the less than savory things going on there.

"Ready to transmit," Belle piped up cheerily.

"Being," the captain signaled. "This is Captain Barrett of the UNS Navigator. Wakayama vessel, do you read me?"

There was a quiet crackling of static and then a shaky man's voice came over the intercom. "Umm, hello, Captain. This is Kino Wakayama. I'm, uh, in a little distress here. If it isn't too much trouble, do you think you could, err, pick me up?"

"Wakayama?" Jorge asked. He and Marguerite exchanged skeptical looks.

"Please," Kino entreated them again upon hearing the response.

"No need to beg, Mr. Wakayama," Janay answered, stifling the urge to laugh at his nervous pleading. "We will be happy to help you."

Marguerite flinched at her captain's choice. Though in that position she might have also agreed to help, she would have asked a few more questions first. The whole thing was both a bit strange and a bit suspicious

"Can you maneuver well enough to come about and dock in our storage hold?"

"Yes, I, uh, I think so," Kino replied.

"Wonderful," Janay smiled encouragingly, even though there was no visual link between their ships. "Then I will see you in the hold."

"Yes, huh? Oh, yeah, yes."

The comm. channel clicked shut.

"What a dork," Marguerite thought.
