His superior looked at him, his face stretched in a scowl that was specifically created, the scuttlebutt had it, to scare the rookies.
But Iijima had been intimidated by the best in his insei days and only stood there, unfazed. He waited as his superior read through the preliminary report.
"Hn." A flick of his superior's tanned, roughened hands, and the report fell open onto the desk before him "So you think this one's another copycat theft?"
"Yes, chief." He started to elaborate. "Although at first glance, the victim had an obvious and known connection to Shindou Hikaru-"
"The second victim."
"Yes." He met his superior's eyes squarely. "The fact is, the two of them are only casual friends." He refrained from adding, 'and rivals for the Japan Cup'. "Besides, the person who broke into Nase Asumi's home also took other items, such as her watch. But there was nothing else missing in Shindou Hikaru's apartment."
His superior nodded, his eyes narrowed in thought.
Iijima drew breath to highlight other differences (that had been covered in the report anyway).
His superior interrupted his train of thought. "Why did you ask to take on this case, Iijima?" he asked. "Surely you're not interested in minor cases like this one?"
Iijima hesitated only for a second before launching into a brief explanation, the one he had rehearsed at home just for this moment, about his days as an insei.
"You know this Nase Asumi, then?"
He stood stiffly. "I assure you, chief, there will be no conflict of interest. I-"
A dismissive shake of his superior's head made him stop. "You interested in her or something?" His tone had turned abruptly from official to one of masculine teasing.
"Chief!" he exclaimed, scandalised.
"Wouldn't have been the first time this happened to one of my men-" his superior shrugged.
Indignant, Iijima said, "Chief, she is a good friend of mine, and we have known each other for years. In fact, we continued being friends even after I stopped being an insei." My first friend in the insei class, my first and last opponent. "I knew that she was very upset at the theft of her goban, and I offerred to help her ask for updates on the case. When I discovered that the case was being passed around and no one was actually in charge of it..."
His superior held up a hand. "All right, all right, I get it. I know your capabilities. Do your best, then." He looked down at the report, stamped 'Approved' on it, and dropped it lightly onto the 'out' tray, topping a stack of documents that looked like they were about to fall over any moment.
Discreetly, Iijima heaved a sigh of relief. Then he exclaimed as the stack toppled to the floor in a splash of paper.
