[May 4, 2008][Final Fantasy IX] The Successful Gourmand
Title: The Successful Gourmand
Day/Theme: May 4, 2008 "Sailing seas and climbing banyans"
Series: Final Fantasy IX
Character/Pairing: Quina, Zidane
Rating: G
"Zidane, this good eat?" Quina, the eternally famished Qu, inquired, holding up an orange and brown creature. It wriggled frantically in Quina's grasp, hoping against fate that it would be able to wriggle to safety and slither away into the safety of the water lapping their vessel.
"Eww!" Zidane turned up his nose at the fishy stench of the lizard-like animal. "Isn't that a speckled sea salamander? No, I am pretty sure that is not 'good eat.'" Sure it was amusing to see what possible delicacy would catch Quina's eye next, but even Zidane knew that there was a time and place for that kind of thing and an official diplomatic visit to Lindblum was not exactly one of those times.
"Well, only one way find out!" the Qu declared cheerily, waddling away to the galley.
Zidane had to give his comrade one thing- Quina certainly wasn't afraid to try new things. Residing as head gourmand and chef in the castle at Alexandria, Quina had created some of the most exciting new dishes to line the banquet hall like stewed frog kabobs and seaweed flake rice. Of course, there had also been some awful flops- things that only appealed to Quina's specialized palate, like that stinky snail and parsnip souffle. The scent alone had been enough to send him running for the bathroom.
Quina had been gaining quite a reputation for culinary genius. The ever-enterprising Tantalus crew had arranged for a local writer to compile Quina's growing collection of recipes into a cookbook, which they were sure would be a best-seller from Burmecia to the Black Mage Village. Zidane wished he could share in their enthusiasm, but he wasn't going to be receiving any of the profits, despite his extraordinary efforts in personally tracking down such rare ingredients as yellow pine plums, edible fern fronds, the small-snouted marmouse, and the ever-elusive Burmecian snow cheese, which went for exorbitant prices on the local market.
Blank has said they were keeping his share because as the queen's consort, he had little need for extra funds anymore.
"Just because she had money doesn't mean she gives me any!" Zidane had pleaded unsuccessfully.
A savory odor caught his nose and drew the young man down into the galley.
"Roast salamander good," Quina declared as Zidane looked on and drooled.
